As a kid delivering Newsday, I’d see Pitino, Mullin, Berry & Jackson on the back cover. 40 years later, Roger Rubin of Newsday writes about my St. John’s experience. Surreal. Beyond grateful to Coach Pitino for the opportunity to be a part of this team.

Thank you to the California Highway Patrol for the escorts the past 4 days in San Diego. Can't help but wonder if it's a sign... Back in 1985 when St. John's made the Final Four, I LOVED watching CHiPs reruns!!!! @CHP_San_Diego

Over the years I don't know if I've seen any New York college or pro athlete carry himself any better than Zuby Ejiofor has. How the St. John’s star was shaped by four parents and found basketball greatness through one of them, a Vietnam War era refugee from Laos. nytimes.com/athletic/71305…

This is a great article by @statsbywill. I included a table of the top 20 teams in Shot Volume Index (SVI) this season which measures generating extra possessions. Take a look at the coaches on this list… wow. • Legends: Rick Pitino, Mark Few, Kelvin Sampson, Matt Painter, Rick Barnes • Young superstars: Todd Golden, Jon Scheyer, T.J. Otzelberger, Shaheen Holloway And how about this? • 10 of the 20 won Conference Coach of the Year this season • Of the other 10, 8 have won it previously • The remaining 2 are first-year coaches — BOTH finalists for the Joe B. Hall Award

Exactly one month ago, I outlined why leaving Zuby Ejiofor off the Wooden Award watch list was difficult to justify. Since then, he’s only elevated his level of play. In the Big East Tournament final vs. UConn: 18 points 9 rebounds 7 blocks 3 steals 7-for-11 from the field Over the final 6 games of the season — leading St. John’s to BOTH the Big East regular season and tournament titles — Zuby reached another level: 20 PPG on elite efficiency (67.1% FG, 80.0% FT) 4.2 Assists PG 3.3 Blocks PG 1.3 Steals PG In a 32-point bounce-back win over Villanova (after the UConn loss), he added a triple-double: 16 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists Over the past month, Zuby has swept every Big East award he is eligible for: - Player of the Year - Most Outstanding Player (Big East Tournament) - Defensive Player of they Year - Scholar-Athlete of the Year And a reminder that last season he won the Big East Most Improved Player. At this point, it's not just about being on the Wooden Award watch list. It's about how far up it he belongs.
Jason Fortin@FortinAnalytics

Zuby Ejiofor being left off the Wooden Award watch list is hard to justify. The list seems heavily tilted toward raw scoring totals. Meanwhile, Zuby is 3 steals away from being the only player in Division I this season to lead his team in total points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. He already leads St. John’s in points, rebounds, assists and blocks. His value to the team goes WAY BEYOND statistics in terms of leadership, unselfishness, the ability to switch 1 through 5 (which reduces his rebound and block numbers) and his incredibly high motor and positive energy sets the tone for the team in every game and practice.

I have a problem with you @sethdavishoops for getting the facts wrong while playing the “journalism standards” card on others. On Selection Sunday, St. John’s was not ranked 17th as you said by ANY of the three official PREDICTIVE metrics: Torvik: 15 KenPom: 16 BPI: 16 SJU was 15th in the NET. And this morning, EvanMiya has St. John’s at 11th in his predictive metric. So where exactly are you getting 17 from? That matters, because 16 profiles as a 4 seed, while 17 is a 5 seed. And of course, you didn't mention St. John's official RESUME metrics on Selection Sunday in your post because it didn't fit your narrative: KPI: 10 (Kevin Pauga is a genius!!!) WAB: 13 SOR: 16 That said, looking foward to what we have ahead of us in San Diego! Let's go Johnnies!!!!!!!
Seth Davis@SethDavisHoops

Seeing outrage in some nyc media quarters over St. John's getting a 5 seed. I thought they could sneak onto the 4 line but keep in mind their best noncon win was over Baylor on a neutral court. They went 2-1 vs UConn but Big East was meh and their predictive metrics were in the 16/17 range. So it aligns pretty well with a 5 seed. I expected a 4 but would have been shocked at a 3. A quibble, perhaps, but hardly cause for outrage. Though I love the action!

Such a magical night at MSG!!!! So proud of Coach Taliek Brown. Taliek was the lead scout against his alma mater, UConn, where he is still the program’s all-time assists leader. The first week of February was Taliek Week as he was the lead scout for both of these games: • Tues. 2/3 vs. DePaul — DePaul scored just 56 points • Fri. 2/6 vs. UConn — St. John’s beat UConn at MSG After the DePaul game, our flight got stuck in Chicago because of mechanical issues. Taliek and video coordinator Brandon Irving stayed up all night clipping and charting every UConn offensive possession from that night. St. John’s is now 4-1 in its last 5 games against UConn with Taliek leading the scout. As I mentioned in a post earlier today, UConn had its lowest offensive efficiency game of the season last night. Outside of UConn’s own staff and players, there may not be anyone on the planet who knows UConn’s offensive schemes better than Taliek. Thanks to my friend Dave Berov for sending me this photo.

Updating Zuby's Big East resume: Congrats to Zuby Ejiofor for winning every Big East on-the-court personal and team award he was eligible for in the 2025–26 season: • Preseason Player of the Year • Player of the Year • Most Outstanding Player of the Big East Tournament • Defensive Player of the Year • Scholar-Athlete of the Year • The only unanimous All-Big East First Team selection • One of two unanimous All-Big East All-Defensive Team selections • All-Big East Tournament Team selection • Captain of the outright Big East regular season champions • Big East Tournament champions

Just an incredible player, person, and leader.

Thank you to @RobDauster for pointing out back in November that there was an appetite on X for St. John's defensive efficiency content. SJU held UConn to 0.82 points per possession in the Big East Tournament final (52 points on 63 possessions). That was UConn's lowest offensive efficiency game of the season - previous low was 0.92 PPP in the loss to Marquette in the regular season finale. Let's Go Johnnies!!!!!!!!!!
Rob Dauster@RobDauster

In three games against top 30 KenPom competition, St. John's is 0-3 while allowing 90.3 point per game. They're giving up 1.23 PPP in those three games. For context, last season, Mississippi Valley State was the only team that in the country that allowed more than 1.23 PPP.
