Graphite is one of the weakest links in the entire EV battery supply chain. The @IEA Energy Technology Perspectives 2026 report introduces an 'N-1' supply chain security analysis. Remove the largest supplier, see what's left. The chart below shows each step of the EV battery supply chain and how much demand the rest of the world can cover without China. Cars? Manageable. But move into anodes and graphite, and the share of global demand that can be met without China collapses. China holds 97% of global anode material capacity and 85% of natural graphite mining. These are among the most concentrated points in any clean energy supply chain. Australia's Resources Minister Madeleine King confirmed the country's A$1.2 billion (~US$793M) critical minerals strategic reserve will include a floor price mechanism, telling delegates at Minerals Week: "We are developing a strategic reserve. And that will no doubt have an element of a floor price as well." Expected to be operational by H2 2026. mining.com/web/australia-…

The @DFCgov is converting $31m of its existing loan to @SyrahResources into equity, taking a ~20% stake and becoming the second largest shareholder. This comes alongside a fully underwritten A$104m equity raise, proposals to restructure remaining debt into convertible notes, and no cash interest or principal repayments for three years. “In today’s era of global competition, economic security is national security,” said DFC CEO Ben Black. “With this transaction, we will secure U.S. access to one of the largest graphite reserves in the world, supply jobs for the U.S. and our allies, and support a valuable hub of economic activity for the people of Mozambique.” Syrah noted that the strategic funding proposals remained non-binding and were subject to a range of conditions. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

South Korea is exempting the 3-8% import tariff on 14 core minerals including graphite, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earths where domestic corporations directly produce and bring in those minerals from overseas. Takes effect April 3. biz.chosun.com/en/en-policy/2…

The oil shock is accelerating EV adoption across Asia. According to Bloomberg, BYD dealerships in the Philippines have logged a full month of orders in just two weeks. Albeit small volumes, VinFast in Hanoi sold 250 EVs in three weeks, double the 2025 weekly rate. MG dealers in Thailand are seeing 20%+ sales increases. Southeast Asian EV adoption rates are already around 40%, exceeding the UK and Europe. And before the war even started, China's overseas EV shipments in Jan-Feb had already more than doubled YoY. japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/…

In our latest episode, I spoke with Peter Wright, CEO of @Greenwing_GW1. Greenwing is a critical minerals company with a graphite mine in Madagascar, a lithium project in Argentina, and a polymetallic asset in Tasmania. The company operated its Graphmada graphite mine from 2018 to 2020, producing qualified commercial concentrates sold into the US, Europe, and India with no penalties or rejections. We cover: - How Greenwing is planning the restart of Graphmada, scaling from 6,000 tpa to a 60,000 tpa - Why Peter sees sovereign states, not battery makers or OEMs, as the next major driver of graphite demand - The resource growth from 5Mt to 60Mt+, with potential to exceed 100Mt - Madagascar's political landscape, the new government, and the permitting bottleneck holding back - other projects on the island - Why Greenwing is focused purely on upstream mining and won't pursue downstream processing - US, EU, and Japanese policy signals and why graphite is the US's number two critical mineral priority - The search for a strategic partner and why Peter believes the environment for that is improving rapidly - How Graphmada's tenure, production record, and logistics compare to its Madagascar peers youtube.com/watch?v=doDTvd…

A $668M (1 trillion won) synthetic graphite anode supply contract has been secured by Posco Future M, covering deliveries to an undisclosed global automaker from 2027-2032. This is separate to the $447M (670 billion won) natural graphite anode deal Posco Future M signed with the same automaker in October, bringing the combined anode supply commitment to over $1.1 billion. To fulfil the synthetic contract, Posco Future M will invest ~$238M (357 billion won) in a new synthetic graphite anode plant in Vietnam. koreatimes.co.kr/business/compa…

The DOE just announced $500M to "expand domestic battery manufacturing" and end reliance on "hostile foreign actors." One arm of the U.S. government is pouring money into supply chain resilience. While another (the ITC) just ruled that China's near-monopoly on AAM isn't injuring the U.S. anode industry. That's despite the Department of Commerce affirming dumping and subsidies at every step of the case. energy.gov/articles/energ…

In a 2-1 decision, the International Trade Commission has ruled that Chinese active anode material is not harming the domestic U.S. industry - a surprise outcome that effectively kills the antidumping and countervailing duty case and removes combined duties of 160%. The Department of Commerce affirmed the case, finding combined dumping and subsidy margins of 160%, but the ITC concluded that Chinese AAM is not materially retarding the establishment of a domestic U.S. industry. A disappointing result for the sector, and one that is difficult to reconcile with the broader U.S. critical minerals policy direction. graphitehub.com/itc-votes-nega…

Announced today that Posco Future M is investing ~$246M to build a synthetic graphite anode plant in Thai Nguyen, Vietnam, with mass production targeted from 2028. The site can be expanded to 55,000 tonnes, with phased capacity growth planned in line with orders. The company currently operates 8,000 tpa of synthetic graphite anode capacity in Pohang, South Korea. businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleVi…

While Western anode supply chains remain largely on paper, China shipped 2.92 million tons of anode material in 2025 - up 38.1% YoY and an 18x increase since 2017. That's a 42% CAGR sustained over eight years. The gap isn't closing. It's widening.
