From 15 to 18 December, INTERPOL and NOAA teamed up to deliver a joint training on pre-arrival checks and port inspections under the CCAMLR umbrella—uniting 170 officers from 17 countries to strengthen enforcement and protect our oceans against #IUUfishing. 🌊🐟

🔵 30,000 live animals seized in global operation against wildlife and forestry crime A global operation against the illegal trafficking of wild fauna and flora has led to the seizure of nearly 30,000 live animals and the identification of 1,100 suspects. From 15 September – 15 October, law enforcement agencies comprising police, customs, border security and forestry and wildlife authorities from 134 countries made a total of 4,640 seizures during Operation Thunder 2025. This record number of seizures included tens of thousands of protected animals and plants and tens of thousands of cubic metres of illegally logged timber, as well as more than 30 tonnes of species classified as endangered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora @CITES. Coordinated by @INTERPOL_HQ and the @WCO_OMD, the operation sought to intercept and seize illegally traded wildlife and forestry commodities across the global supply chain and identify, disrupt and dismantle criminal networks involved in these types of environmental crime. While live animal seizures reached a record high this year — driven largely by demand for exotic pets — most wildlife trafficking involved animal remains, parts and derivatives, often used in traditional medicine or specialty foods. On 18 November, following a seizure of nearly 10,000 shark fins bound for Asia in Peru and at the request of Peruvian authorities, INTERPOL provided digital forensics and analytical assistance in support of follow up transnational investigations. This #WorldFisheriesDay is a reminder that Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing harms aquatic ecosystems and threatens the livelihoods of fishing communities. 🚨 Americas: Environmental crime operation leads to 225 arrests, identifies hundreds more suspects Operation Madre Tierra VII, led by INTERPOL’s Regional Bureau for Central America with support from the Environmental Security unit, brought together officers from nine countries to identify suspects and cases, share intelligence and target known hotspots. Preliminary results show that more than 400 environmental crimes were reported, including: 🔵 203 for forestry and illegal logging 🔵 138 for wildlife trafficking 🔵 26 for illegal fishing 🔵 23 for illegal mining 🔵 16 for pollution crimes Authorities also identified 15 transnational cases and multiple trafficking routes to Europe and Asia. The group was engaged in large-scale illegal wildlife trafficking and poaching. The operation deployed 15 prosecutors and specialised police personnel, with technical collaboration from @SerforPeru (Peru’s National Forest and Wildlife Service), @INTERPOL_HQ (providing digital forensics and intelligence support), and the @USFWS, whose investigative agents facilitated cross-border coordination in #China #USA and #Peru.
