NAFTA was sold by the Democrats as reform.
Moving America into a service-based economy was sold as reform by the Democrats.
The Democrats Giving China Most Favored Nation status which allowed American corporations to deindustrialize the country was sold as reform. Now you can't find a job. So much for supporting the working class.
Free healthcare for all with the Affordable Care Act was sold as reform.
Endless social programs were sold as reform.
And now we have entire city and state systems bending over backward to fund services, housing, benefits, legal aid, schooling, healthcare, and logistical support for illegal migrants while working Americans are told to shut up, pay the bill, and stop being “bigoted” for noticing the obvious.
And every single time people warned that it would gut the industrial base, destroy the buying power of the dollar, expand the bureaucracy overall, and make life harder for everyone, they were called stupid, racist, ignorant, backward, or out of touch.
The best part of all... No accountability or self awareness, but a lot of mouthy bullshit from the very people who supported it all.

The main issue is that some states like red states actually like building housing and predominantly blue states DO NOT.
However at the federal level there has been little means of fixing this.

Hey, am I the only one who remembers the Obama years, when we were fighting two wars overseas and all the kids and leftists demanded free healthcare for all? I seem to remember people warning them, very clearly, that if you try to fight multiple wars abroad while blowing out domestic spending at home, you are going to wreck the value of the dollar and send the cost of living through the roof? Literally warning everyone that we'd be paying six bucks for a taco one day. Well kiddos we’re at four now. The most annoying thing to me is that those same mouthy, sneering kids who called anyone warning about this a racist, ignorant, bigoted, stupid boomer “okay boomer,” are now blaming boomers for the fact that they can’t afford anything. No. You voted for that shit. You were warned what it would do. You were warned what it would cost. You were warned what would happen to the dollar. You were mouthy and ignorant then. You’re mouthy and ignorant now. At some point, why don’t you accept a little accountability for helping create the exact mess you’re now whining and crying about? Check the chart...

Populists and radicals will destroy the economy with insane spending, and the country's budget will simply be driven into deficit, and deficit is the main enemy of the economy and prosperity. Also, let's not forget that even a right-wing populist is no better economically than a left-wing populist, because both will fanatically screw up taxes on those they hate, even if it ultimately hurts ordinary people. The economy must work for people's prosperity through the neoliberalism of the 80s and 90s, because this model brought the West to a level of prosperity after decades of stagflation, and under Clinton, a budget surplus was achieved, and therefore we need to return to real fiscal responsibility
