Remember when BC Ferries built those three aluminum-hulled PacifiClass High Speed(Fast Cat) ferries that were supposed to bring transportation into the new age? Proposed budget was $210M. Actual budget was $450M and 3 years late. Then became a colossal failure by being overweight, slower than projected, paint peeling off, too expensive to operate and couldn't operate in most terminals. They refused to listen to their expert engineers who worked on their vessels when they said it wouldn't work. They ended up being decommissioned a few years later and sold for $20M. This is the largest example of provincial mismanagement and cost overruns in BC history. Now imagine a $90BILLION dollar train system when Toronto can't even keep the Go Train running.

Some personal news to share. My regular column with La Presse has been suspended indefinitely this week, after 25 years and more than 1,000 columns. This was not my decision. The decision is linked to recent public comments I made on social media regarding the evolving media landscape in Canada, including reflections on government support for media and its potential implications. I understand that these are sensitive and complex issues, and my remarks may not have aligned with the publication’s perspective. While I am disappointed, I fully respect their decision and remain grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to contribute over the years. I would also like to note that my contributions were always made on a voluntary basis. I was never compensated for my columns, and have personally supported La Presse through a paid subscription throughout that time. It has truly been a privilege to write for such an important institution. I continue to believe that open, thoughtful discussions about the future of media in Canada are both necessary and healthy.

The question to ask is, why can’t the government build anything without giving hand outs to their friends? Why do they have to defraud the Canadian tax payer on any project they attempt? Why are they always over budget? Why are they never finished on time? The insiders get rich and the tax payers pay more tax. That is why it is not common sense.

High-speed rail connecting the Montreal-Windsor corridor is the most common sense infrastructure investment imaginable. If the federal government can't build railways in 2026, what's even the point?

Macron was in South Korea when someone asked him about it. He paused. Seven words delivered with the quiet, devastating calm of someone who genuinely does not need to raise their voice because the staff will handle it. Consider the man on the other end of that eyebrow. A man who wears a red baseball cap to diplomatic meetings and a white one to funerals. A man who arrives at the most solemn occasions in the world looking like he has just wandered in from a golf buggy. A man whose morning routine apparently involves industrial quantities of spray tan applied to a face that has, at various medical estimations, the cardiovascular profile of a blocked Manhattan sewer. A man whose idea of a state dinner is a quarter pounder eaten alone in a motorcade. This is the man who decided to lecture the world about Emmanuel Macron’s marriage. Trump called NATO a “paper tiger.” He mocked a head of state’s wife. He uploaded the whole embarrassing performance to the White House YouTube channel, briefly, before someone in the building apparently remembered that diplomacy exists and pulled the plug. Macron’s response landed like a white glove placed gently on a table. Not thrown. Placed. “Neither elegant nor up to standard.” In French diplomatic circles, that sentence is a declaration of war. In English, it translates roughly to: I have noticed your behavior, and I find it beneath comment, which is why I am commenting on it once, quietly, before returning to matters of actual importance. There is a man in this story who has spent eighty years on this earth and still cannot find a suit that fits, a tie that stops at his belt, or a shade of foundation that occurs anywhere in nature. And there is a man who responded to being publicly humiliated by the most powerful person on earth with seven words and a expression that could freeze the Seine.
