My husband's aunt comes over a few times a week and spends time with the kids. She's been helping me reorganize cupboards, bringing over bins, lining my drawers with little cute mats, and I've felt guilty because my mind says "this should have been done already." Moments ago she said, "I'm glad this makes you happy. My mother used to do this type of stuff for me." And now I'm emotional realizing that she's not helping because she judges me for some disorganized cupboards, thinks I'm incapable of this task, or whatever else I may tell myself. She's helping me because she just wants to. She knows how much time it saves me so I can focus on other things. Her mother helped her, now she helps me. A passing of the generational torch, if you will. We've lost this collectively and we need to bring it back. Generational support makes a huge difference, and if we don't have that support ourselves, we MUST be prepared to provide that for our own children or family members when the time comes.
