If Iran acquired nuclear weapons capable of striking Europe, the consequences would be devastating. With Iran’s geographic proximity, ballistic missile flight times would be short, just around 15 minutes to hit Rome or Berlin. The compressed timeline would leave minimal room for detection and decision-making by European states. The ballistic missiles would travel at high speeds accompanied by decoys and saturation salvos, overwhelming defenses and leaving major European cities vulnerable to catastrophic strikes as missile defense systems don’t have 100% interception rates. Critically, Iran's status as an Islamist theocracy infused with Shia eschatology complicates traditional deterrence. Beliefs in the Mahdi's return and the apocalyptic scenarios accompanying it are likely to drive elements of the regime to prioritize religious imperatives over survival. There are elements among Shia Islamists who believe that it's both possible and desirable to speed up the arrival of the Mahdi and the end of times.
