Scottish Labour Women's Declaration
Short thread from our @LabWomenDec sisters. There are plenty of women who stood by Jenni when she was under attack, who could have been asked to pay tribute. @bindelj would have been ideal - perhaps a spot on @BBCWomansHour next week?

Wholly inadequate @BBCBreaking tribute to Jenni Murray with its single reference, given without context or explanation, to Jenni pulling "out of an Oxford University talk amid a backlash over comments she made about transgender people" 1/ bbc.com/news/articles/…?

"I explained that no one stereotype fitted the definition of woman — there were many, many different types in our gender who had to be served but we did all share one thing: our sex." Jenni Murray remembering her final sign off from @BBCWomansHour in 2020 #RIPJenniMurray 3/

The backlash against Jenni was from you, the BBC, cheered on by your outlier friends like Stonewall, because she stood up for women's sex-based rights. Take heed now of Jenni's final words in her sign off programme in 2020 & the song she chose: youtube.com/watch?v=8XVlXs… 2/

Portugal is moving to roll back its self-ID law. After years of one-directional policy, there is now a push to reintroduce medical safeguards and limits, especially for minors. Change of course is possible. publico.pt/2026/03/20/pol…

I truly believe that if the BBC had allowed journalist Jenni Murray to do her job, we'd have smashed NoDebate years ago. From 2018 GRA consultation on, Womens Hour would have looked at it all. We'd have had the debate. That's how important she was & why she had to be silenced.
Cath Leng@leng_cath

Was told outright in a BBC training session that Jenni Murray ‘had been silenced’. A travesty. She was terrific.

Attempts to cancel her in 2017 led a lot of people (including me) to take a second look and notice something is not right. theguardian.com/society/2017/m…

Jenni was driven from a job she loved for holding to the scientific & social reality that men and women are different & biology matters. Harman was missing in action. She should apologise.
Harriet Harman@HarrietHarman

Impossible to overstate the importance of Jenni Murray to the movement of women that changed our politics, economy & our society; that changed our lives. She was the broadcasting wing of the women’s movement. We all owe her. RIP. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@LibVoice4Women @whjm Her last sentence on WH was brilliant: ‘If you do a programme like [@BBCWomansHour] you have to consistently remind yourself that women are a vast range. There are many different stereotypes that fit our gender, so there's no one stereotypical woman’ … ‘but our sex we share.'

In terms of Vaclav Havel’s famous 1978 essay “The Power of the Powerless”, about the greengrocer who refuses to conform, Jenni Murray was one of the first to remove that sign from her shop window Stonewall knew the potency of her refusal: they made sure she paid for her sedition

This case has been quite astounding - apparently not a single person could foresee that open showers - no curtains or partitions - being made mixed sex might be an issue for women. Nobody said a word. The oppressive atmosphere that genderists create cannot be underestimated

I commissioned this column by Jenni Murray back when I was doing a bit of work for Prospect in 2022. In defence of @MumsnetTowers. A journalist who didn't shy from the truth, and who paid a price for that. prospectmagazine.co.uk/society/38415/…

We are very grateful to Dame Murray for speaking at our first ever fringe event in Bournemouth in 2023. Back when we couldn't even get an advert in the Lib Dems conference literature. Here is her write up. 2/2 dailymail.co.uk/lifestyle/arti…

This is such sad news with which to end the week, and our thoughts are with Jenni's family and close friends. She was a brave, principled broadcaster who refused to toe the 'no-debate' line in discussions of women's sex-based rights. We owe her. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
