BREAKING: Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif posted the following on X on April 9, hours before the Islamabad talks begin: “Israel is evil and a curse for humanity, while peace talks are underway in Islamabad, genocide is being committed in Lebanon. Innocent citizens are being killed by Israel, first Gaza, then Iran and now Lebanon, bloodletting continues unabated. I hope and pray people who created this cancerous state on Palestinian land to get rid of European jews burn in hell.” This is the Defense Minister of the host country. Not a backbencher. Not a provincial politician. The cabinet member responsible for Pakistan’s military coordination with the United States, including with CENTCOM. The official whose ministry is managing the security arrangements for the very talks at which Vice President Vance will sit down on Saturday morning. The man overseeing Vance’s safety in Islamabad just called Vance’s closest ally in this war “evil,” a “curse for humanity,” and a “cancerous state.” No one in the Sharif government issued a rebuke. No clarification. No distancing. The silence is the signal. This is not an isolated outburst. It is the second structural crack in Pakistan’s mediator neutrality in 72 hours. The first was Prime Minister Sharif’s April 7 ceasefire announcement, which the New York Times and Forbes revealed carried a “Draft” header and had been pre-approved by the White House. That announcement declared the ceasefire applied “everywhere including Lebanon.” Within hours, Netanyahu’s office stated the ceasefire “does not include Lebanon.” Vance called this a “legitimate misunderstanding.” Araghchi quote-tweeted Sharif’s “including Lebanon” text and highlighted those two words for 3.69 million viewers. Pakistan’s announcement created the scope ambiguity. And now Pakistan’s Defense Minister has publicly sided with Iran’s interpretation of what that scope requires. The mediator is not mediating. The mediator is arguing. Asif’s post arrived at 17:02 GMT on April 9, while the Iranian delegation was already on Pakistani soil, while the Serena Hotel was being emptied of guests, while seven layers of security were being erected around the Red Zone, while a 30-member US security advance team was already on the ground. It was posted into the exact diplomatic window where the host country’s perceived neutrality is the single most important variable determining whether both delegations sit down in good faith. Israel did not agree to include Lebanon in the ceasefire. This is confirmed. Netanyahu’s office said it explicitly. The White House confirmed it. The IDF launched Operation Eternal Darkness on April 8, the heaviest coordinated bombardment of Lebanon since the war began, killing at least 254 people in a single day. Israel’s position is that Lebanon is a “separate skirmish” and its operations against Hezbollah are covered by separate security mandates. Whether one agrees with that position or not, it is the stated position of a key party to the broader conflict. And the host country’s Defense Minister just called that party a “cancerous state” whose creators should “burn in hell.” Pakistan was chosen as mediator precisely because it maintains working relationships with both Washington and Tehran. That was the entire basis of its credibility. Army chief Asim Munir held calls with leaders in both capitals. Islamabad offered the Serena, the security, the diplomatic infrastructure. CNN described Pakistan as having been elevated from “pariah state” to indispensable mediator. Axios called Vance’s visit the most significant US-Iran engagement since 1979. And the man responsible for the host country’s defense posture used his personal platform, hours before the highest-stakes diplomatic encounter in a generation, to declare one side’s ally a curse upon humanity. The talks may still proceed. The logistics are in motion. But the mediator’s mask just slipped, and both delegations saw it fall.

Have you noticed a pattern? France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously recognize Palestine at exactly the same time. France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously demand a ceasefire with Hamas. France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously demand a ceasefire with Iran. France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously demand a two state solution. France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously consistently condemn any action taken by Israel to defend itself. France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously refuse to help the US in the Strait of Hormuz. France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously call for Lebanon to be part of this ceasefire. Time after time after time, France, UK, Australia and Canada all simultaneously stand with terrorists and against the west.

I unequivocally condemn the massive strikes by Israel across Lebanon on 8 April that resulted in hundreds of civilians being killed & injured, including children. With the announcement of the ceasefire between Iran & the USA, the ongoing military activity in Lebanon poses a grave risk to the ceasefire & the efforts toward a lasting & comprehensive peace in the region. Hostilities must stop immediately. International law must be respected. Civilians & civilian objects must be protected at all times. Attacks against them are unacceptable. There is no military solution to the conflict. un.org/sg/en/content/…

@JakeWSimons You used to root for Trump. You clearly don’t understand what all this is about. It’s a much bigger plan - America first. It’s the European leaders I despise. Weak, pathetic and armchair politicians travelling the globe holding meetings. WTF is Starmer in the Middle East?

PAKISTAN—LEBANON—ISRAEL As noted earlier by Israel’s ambassador to India, Pakistan is not a neutral mediator just as Qatar was not in the Gaza negotiations. This statement by the Pakistani ambassador to the US proves the pocint. Both the US (VP Vance and the WH) and Israel have stated unequivocally that the ceasefire does NOT APPLY TO LEBANON. Here Pakistan slavishly and predictably mimics the Islamist regime’s position.

Starmer has immediately flown to the Middle East to emphasise his crucial role in the US-Iran ceasefire, which he didn’t broker, didn’t know was coming, didn’t participate in shaping and had absolutely no part in whatsoever

@AllisonPearson Surely you must know this is Iran’s BS. The ceasefire buys US time and the real proposal to be worked out. Otherwise war continues.

Ceasefire 1- The United States gained a two-week window to control the oil and gas market and confront the Islamic Republic from a higher and better position. 2- The Islamic Republic lost its card to create a crisis in the oil and gas market. 3- Trump's threat to destroy power plants and bridges elevated the threats from the United States and Israel to the level of threats against the survival of the Islamic Republic, forcing the regime to retreat. 4- This retreat is like the retreat after the final defeats in the war with Iraq, when the regime was forced to accept Resolution 598 to avoid collapse. 5- The retreat under pressure is similar to the acceptance of the JCPOA in 2015 due to fear of economic collapse during that period. 6- Trump intends to include four main conditions in any agreement, which again means the surrender of the Islamic Republic. The four conditions are: halting enrichment, halting the ballistic missile program, cutting support for proxies, and handing over enriched uranium. 7- If the Islamic Republic accepts these conditions, it is surrender; if it does not, the likelihood of war restarting is very high. 8- The Islamic Republic has lost Khamenei and a very large number of its commanders and officials, making this top level of the government structure fragile, while the Islamic Republic has not been able to kill any of the commanders and officials of the United States and Israel. 9- The IRGC Navy commander was killed, and the force itself was severely damaged and cannot be rebuilt anytime soon. 10- The Islamic Republic's air force has been almost completely destroyed, with many bases and aircraft demolished. 11- The country's air defense has been almost completely destroyed and is ineffective. 12- The country's skies are still under the control of the United States and Israel. 13- Most petrochemical industries, as a source of foreign currency revenue, have been destroyed. 14- Many military industries across the country have been destroyed. 15- Many Basij headquarters and bases have been destroyed. 16- Police command centers in the provinces and many police stations have been demolished. 17- The Minister of Intelligence and many of the main managers of this ministry have been killed. 18- The head of the IRGC Intelligence Organization has been killed. 19- The head and deputy of Faraja Intelligence have been killed. Overall, it is a major intelligence failure. 20- The head and deputy of the Basij have been killed. 21- The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces has been killed. 22- Shamkhani, Secretary of the Defense Council, has been killed. The council was unsuccessful in managing the war. 23- The IRGC Commander-in-Chief has been killed. 24- Two heads of the Sepand Organization, responsible for building nuclear weapons for the regime, have been killed. 25- The Minister of Defense has been killed. 26- The Gulf Cooperation Council member states have joined the ranks of the enemies of the Islamic Republic. 27- The route to bypass sanctions through Dubai has been shut down. 28- Friendship with Qatar has been lost and turned into enmity. 29- The country's economy is facing a wave of accumulated demands from the war period and war damages that were deferred during the war and are now flooding the government. 30- The people of Iran, as the most important opposing force against the Islamic Republic, still demand the overthrow of the regime, and after the January massacre, a sea of blood, hatred, and anger has been created between the people and the regime. 31- The ceasefire does not yet mean the end of the war. 32- The Islamic Republic has become even more discredited in the eyes of the people because it abandoned the people and civilians during the war. 33- The Islamic Republic calls these things victory because it hasn't fallen yet. 34- Politics has many ups and downs; patience is required. - @RezaVaisi
