so what’s the verdict on using your wooden cutting boards to prepare meat? I tossed out my plastic cutting boards because of the microplastics

About 6% of U.S. MD seniors don't match into residency (2024 AMA data, post-SOAP). Of those who start, overall attrition is ~4.8% (one large cohort study), though it ranges 2-7%+ by specialty (higher in surgery/psych). Roughly 9-11% of MD grads thus never complete full residency, which typically blocks unrestricted licensure and board-certified practice in most states. Data varies yearly/specialty; most who match do finish and license.

PSA for parents of newborns: No one told us, when we brought our youngest home from the hospital, that we should try to keep him away from other people (including our older kids) until his immune system got stronger. Then he got RSV & would have died if we hadn't brought him to the emergency room at Children's Hospital in LA. So now I'm telling you.

@moseskagan One of my kids asked "what is the worst disease?" during a recent well visit... and I was thinking Ebola, HIV, etc., but I said "the worst ones to get are vaccine preventable ones that were nearly eliminated, like polio" - why you are getting the TDAP and IPV boosters today!

Believe the Chinese have a custom where the newborn and new mom are sequestered at home for a month postpartum (with someone to take care of them). Think this might an example of a custom rooted in some real multi-generational wisdom (of the type Joseph Heinrich discusses in The Secret of Our Success).

Have been mulling the following recently: 1. When I was in college, there were retired people auditing ~all of my lecture classes 2. Turned out this was a program offered by the college to retired people who lived near campus 3. I decided that was how I wanted to spend my retirement Now I see: 1. A wave of Boomer retirements happening 2. Many of these people hungry for friends / community, and 2. Many colleges in tough financial circumstances And I think there is an opportunity to build or renovate apartment buildings walking distance from colleges offering this kind of program, and rent them to retirees.

Has anyone ever been successful adding a disabled parent under the age of 65 to their own family health insurance plan?

Apparently someone went around DTLA and chopped down a bunch of trees last night. Somehow nobody saw or stopped them. (video from DTLA Insider)

Newborn screening saves lives.
National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD)@RareDiseases

The sudden termination of the Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (ACHDNC) by #HHS halts critical progress in adding treatable rare diseases to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (#RUSP). This expert committee has played a vital role in ensuring that life-saving diagnoses and treatments are available to all children – regardless of the state they’re born in. Without this expert guidance, progress on the RUSP is now uncertain, including a scheduled May 9 vote to consider adding two treatable rare diseases: #MetachromaticLeukodystrophy (#MLD) and #Duchenne #MuscularDystrophy (#DMD). Together, their inclusion could help save lives and change health outcomes for the better for an estimated 400–450 newborns each year. At #NORD, we’re raising our voice and standing ready to work alongside government leaders to protect and reinstate the vital work of the #ACHDNC. A healthier America begins at birth—with advancements in #NewbornScreening so no child goes undiagnosed, and no family faces the devastation of a treatable #RareDisease that could have been caught early. nbcnews.com/health/health-…
