Catastrophic insurance is actually what “insurance” is supposed to mean. Routine costs (doc visits, occasional urgent care, prescriptions, the sort of stuff that people predictably use) were paid in cash - and were cheaper because of it. INSURANCE was supposed to be for unpredictable costs, like getting cancer or hit by a bus. And catastrophic insurance was fantastic for that purpose without breaking the bank. “Insurance” for predictable, routine costs that most people incur is just called “paying overhead on top of expenses,” which is why most people carry accident insurance but not maintenance insurance on their cars. It wasn’t consumers who were stupid.

@SlopHq DC had a great streetcar system that was abandoned and shutdown by the early 60's. No overhead wires. I barely remember them from my childhood.

the dc streetcar's final week of service is upon us. it was born in a 2002 feasibility study, promised as a 33-mile network, delivered as 2.2 miles on H street with no fare collection, and is being replaced by a bus that does the same thing but can turn. $200 million well spent.

Why get in your car and drive down to the store whenever you feel like it when you can wait for the bus and go on someone else's schedule? Why pack a week's worth of groceries into your trunk when you can carry a bunch of bags while sitting on a piss-covered subway seat and avoiding eye contact with the crazy guy who's yelling threats at everyone?

I was so wrong, cats are cool. I’ve always been a proud “dogs are better than cats” guy. But my dog is an old man now and I wanted to get a pet to soften the blow a little when he passes. Started considering cats when I realized I didn’t really have a good reason not to like them. I started browsing shelters and after a few visits met a grumpy 3 year old cat that had been at the shelter 3 months. He immediately started purring around me and the staff said they hadn’t seen him taken to anyone like that. I adopted him on the spot and he’s been with me for 4 months now, and has completely proven me wrong about cats. He is the coolest little dude around and makes me happy every day. Never been so glad to be wrong! Here’s my boy Bazzi

Tattooing animals for “Funny or cool” reasons is cruelty, not art. It causes pain and fear for their entertainment. It should be illegal and offenders should face jail
