It is now 12 dead. 30 wounded. And the heroic and unarmed civilian who attacked and disarmed the terrorist at the Chanukah massacre in Sydney and seized his rifle is Ahmed El Ahmad. Ahmed, 43, is a father of two and a fruit shop owner. He risked his life to save others. He was shot and wounded. Without his heroism, casualties would have been far higher.

The news from Bondi beach is grim. For many it will have terrible echoes of the massacres on October 7th. For Jews living here it will feel painfully close to the murders at a synagogue in Manchester. It is a reminder - if one was needed - that Jews all over the world now live in fear. If you struggle to understand that fear - you may not have any Jewish family or friends as it is a very small community - I urge you to think of the impact on the Muslim and, indeed, the wider community of the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand. Tonight Jews everywhere will light candles to mark the start of the festival of lights - Hanukkah. Few will feel able to celebrate. Many will be worrying about what might happen next.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Today my family and I are thinking of my grandmother Grete Wiener who died on this day 80 years ago, starved in Belsen but having seen her girls to freedom. A PhD economist, an aide in Nazi resistance work, & in support for refugees. I never got to call her Granny, but I do now.

If Jews really ran Hollywood I’m pretty sure our first pick for Special Ambassador would not have been Mel Gibson. 🤷🏻‍♂️
