I cannot believe I am writing this. Vince Zampella, a titan of the video game industry, the co-creator of Call of Duty and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, not to mention a dear friend, died in a car crash yesterday in Los Angeles.

He was legendary. Such a loss. RIP.

Browsing BGG, I think my prediction from last year is coming true. The next big thing in board gaming is story-driven games with text. Choose-your-own-adventure. We've had weuro, deck-building, legacy, trick-taking and lots of other trends - this is the next one. It's a good trend. A lot of people said Arcs was the best wargame of 2024. I can sort of see why. But I disagree. The best wargame of 2024 was Purple Haze. It was the most immersive, the most compelling, created the best atmosphere and just felt fresh and different. It also has the potential to be drawn in lots of other directions and be established as a series. Other game publishers will no doubt follow this lead. Now, the RPG gamers are going to say "Yeah, we've had this forever. It's nothing new." Yes, it's not entirely new. But neither was trick taking. And I'm talking specifically about self-contained single box board games - not tabletop miniatures or RPG systems. Publishers and designers take note.

@VGC_News I am really enjoying the game. But then, I love historical tourism! So maybe that is why I am a fan? And that is ok? To like a game for that reason? World/setting + History? Yes, it is! Having a blast wandering the world and reading the historical notes and talking to Tokugawa.

Yes, I am quite knowledgeable when it comes to Japan's history and historical figures. Quite easy to follow up who is who. I was refering more to Act 2 main quest structure feeling broken, because you can do main quests in any order. Valhalla had a similar way of doing main quests, but it was done in saga's and it had a bit more structure to it.

@Tiger_Tear @shinobi602 I think the story is more enjoyable when/if you also dive into the historical tidbits. The lore entries are fantastic and very digestable, and there is a slew of very well known historical figures like Ieyasu Tokugawa, Hattori Hanzo, Momochi Sandayu etc. Check wikipedia!

@shinobi602 I have to admit that the world graphics in this game are great. Love the autum season. Too bad the story is all over the place to the point that it becomes annoying to play. Currently over 20 hrs in act 2, and I place the game below Valhalla, story wise.
