The Chinese who are the most genetically close to the Japanese are indeed the northern Chinese, especially the coastal northern Chinese. Phenotypic differences with northern Chinese are caused by Jomon and Yayoi admixture.

If Manchuria survived as a Imperial Japanese exile state under Soviet protection, my grandfather would have become a local bureaucrat in Mukden or a factory owner, my grandmother could have migrated to Manchuria and my father would have been born in Manchuria instead.
