Flying Friday: This video highlights just some of the patrol activity of MSP aviation over the district. These stolen vehicles were returned to their owners. The use of aviation, technology and policy changes makes catching these suspects safer for the public and troopers.

With the arrival of spring comes the start of construction season. Work zones require extra attention from every driver. Expect the unexpected, uneven pavement, narrowed lanes, and changing traffic patterns are common. To stay safe: Slow down and follow posted speeds. Stay off your phone and avoid distractions. Watch closely for workers and equipment. Give yourself extra space between vehicles, patience is key. A few extra seconds can save a life, maybe even your own.

Congratulations Inspector Qureshi! The Michigan State Police (MSP) is pleased to announce that Insp. Fahad Qureshi has graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Inspector Qureshi serves as an assistant district commander assigned to Third District Headquarters and was among the chosen few to attend the 297th Session of the National Academy. This achievement now places Inspector Qureshi among the nearly 57,000 graduates who have attended the National Academy since its inception in July 1935. Inspector Qureshi enlisted with the department in 2013, graduating as a member of the 125th Trooper Recruit School. After graduation, he was assigned as a trooper to the Metro Post. Inspector Qureshi has been promoted multiple times within the MSP, serving as a trooper, sergeant, lieutenant, first lieutenant, and inspector. He has served in the Second and Third Districts and within the Special Operations Division. Inspector Qureshi holds a Master of Business Administration from Cleary University and a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and Bachelor of Arts in political science from Wayne State University. Inspector Qureshi was raised in Monroe and resides in Metro Detroit with his wife and children.

On October 24, 2025 a fire broke out at the American House Senior Living complex in the City of Southgate. Firefighters and police officers from several downriver area departments risked their own safety and entered the building and assisted getting the 87 residents to safety. Tonight, five members of the Metro South Post were honored by the City of Southgate and State Representative Rylee Linting by receiving a Service Award for Bravery and Valor.    Members honored were Sgt. Russell Lady, Tpr. Javon Strickland, Tpr. Juwuan Little, Tpr. Cemiyen Shields, and Tpr. Ty’Shawn Short. In addition the Metro South Post was presented with a Downriver Mutual Aid Matters Award by Mayor Joseph G. Kuspa. A job well done by all who responded and risked their lives in service to others.

With all the snow we just got, check around your home to ensure appliance vents and gas meters are clear, and gently remove any snow buildup. Blocked vents can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, furnace issues, or fire hazards. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors.

You can lead a horse to a blizzard?❄️ This horse was found by Police in the U.P. of Michigan Monday as blizzard conditions were hammering the state. Police were able to locate & return the lost horse to its barn! #MIwx

It’s not every day troopers give a police escort to a horse! This young horse escaped from a farm and ran about a mile north on M-129 in yesterday’s blizzard. MSP Sault Ste Marie troopers and a USBP Agent safely guided her to a neighbor’s barn until her owner could come get her.

Weather update: Some of the roads throughout the Gaylord and Alpena Post areas are impassable and Alpena County is experiencing power outages. Do not drive because there is a good chance you will get stuck. Stay home. Stay safe.

If you are thinking about heading up north you may want to rethink those plans. The Mackinac Bridge is currently closed with no time frame to reopen. We are advising people to stay home in northern Michigan and the UP unless an emergency Stay safe!
