Monotheistic Paganism — or, just what _was_ it Christianity fought and faced? by T.M. [Thomas Martin] Lindsay Historian T.M. Lindsay describes the metaphysical structure of the cosmos — according to the new, Western (essentially _monotheistic_) Paganism which was powerful in the late antique Roman Empire — as it was ultimately planned and envisioned by (the last pagan) Emperor Julian: {quoting…} The Neoplatonic thought of a Trinity of existence took the central place of the Christian {Trinity} in this new pagan theology. Three worlds exist. First and highest is the realm of pure ideas where the Supreme Principle, the One, the Highest Good, the Great First Cause, lives and reigns. Below it is the intellectual world over which presides the same Supreme Principle, but now represented by an emanation from Itself, wholly spiritual, the Logos of the Platonic philosophy. The third is the world of sense existence, the universe of things seen and handled, and there, as beseems its surroundings, the ruler, the emanation from the Supreme Principle, assumes a visible form and can be seen while adored. {/unQuote} The latter, of course, being _Helios_ the (physical) sun in the sky. Superficially it would appear that the foregoing principles don't leave much room for traditional Greco-Roman gods and goddesses of Olympus, together with their religion. Going beyond superficial, let's examine that New Paganism which, during the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D., almost completely replaced the Old Religion(s) — particularly in regard of the _people_ (Roman and otherwise) of the Empire — leaving the old official faith(s) still technically in existance but lingering as mere _simulacra_ of their former religion(s). Following is listing of the pages of T.M. Lindsay's intensely interesting chapter in Vol. I of the _Cambridge Medieval History_ — from which the foregoing excerpt, together with following pages (i.e., Lindsay's entire chapter), were drawn. contents Part I: 1. New religions for Old 2. Cosmopolitan society 3. Oriental religions 4. Isis & Apuleius' _Metamorphoses_ 5. The New Paganism 6. Pagan inscriptions from Tombstones 7. Neoplatonism vis-à-vis Christianity 8. Growing strength of Christianity 9. Imperial repression of Christianity Part II: 10. Flavius Claudius Julianus; a.k.a. Julian 11. Julian's education 12. Julian's Occultism 13. Julian as Caesar (Vice Emperor) in Gaul 14. Julian as Augustus (Emperor) 15. Julian's policy toward Christianity Part III: 16. Julian's attempt to reform Paganism 17. Helios as visible manifestation of God 18. Julian's “Catholic Pagan State Church” 19. Uniting Pagan Piety with the Old Religion 20. Incongruity of the Union 21. Julian's Failure Part IV: 22. “Galilean, Thou hast conquered” 23. Survivals of Paganism in the East 24. Survivals of Paganism in Athens & Greece 25. Survivals of Paganism in the West 26. Indeed, according to the modern “law of gravity”—Einsteinian general relativity—it's “flat” impossible to show that earth is moving, versus the rest of the universe moving instead. That's relativity. Both views are quite correct. Beyond that, as I explained before, flat means perpendicular to gravity. Which does indubitably exist—though it's not a force.

@MichaelEMcNeil @ChrisMartzWX You might be moving at the speed of sound. I sir, am standing still. At peace, with water level, very flat, no curve. Gravity is most definitely fiction.

@MichaelEMcNeil @VWolf83864177 @TakeThatClouds I'm not leftist, but it does seem to be the MAGA crowd who think we never went to the moon and that the (Republican) government is trying to kill them with "chemtrails", so they don't seem to be very patriotic.

What is with this trend for “patriots” with MAGA and flags in their bios trying to denigrate some of America’s greatest achievements? Doesn’t seem very patriotic to me. Seems more like something foreign agents would do, “Eric”… or is that Эрик?

Even in darkness, we glow. In this image of Earth taken by the Artemis II crew, we can see the electric lights of human activity. In the lower right, sunlight illuminates the limb of the planet.

@Athol94519002 @ChrisMartzWX Nature indeed does tell the truth—if one listens. And what it says is that earth is spherical, and flat is perpendicular to gravity.

Full moon is shining on the earth in those images—drowning out in the exposures used all but the brightest stars and planets, which are visible.

@MichaelEMcNeil @lcg123degree @kisubhardwaj99 @NASA @astro_reid And there aren’t stars visible because it’s not an image of “sleepy Earth from orbit”. If it was “an image of Earth’s night side from orbit” made shine like daytime because of more light in the camera, all of the background would shining with stars. But it doesn’t.

You trust “water level” despite never having seen what that means beyond a few feet in your immediate vicinity. That's naivete not science. Grow up! I trust “water level” too—but “level” in physics means “perpendicular to gravity.”

@MichaelEMcNeil @lcg123degree @kisubhardwaj99 @NASA @astro_reid Most credible insights @NASA claims the brighter of 2 images is a result of “slower shutter speed” / “more light into the camera”. This is supposedly a “night time image of Earth from orbit” made look like “daytime” because of more light. But there aren’t any stars visible.

The 5-year-old-suitable explanation is simple: the pic is turned so you don't recognize it. What's visible is similar to many another picture from orbit: showing western and northwestern Africa (exhibiting the prominent Sahara Desert), with Spain just beyond at lower-left. —— pic: Recent (2026-03-25) Dscovr pic of earth showing much the same scene. Note that Dscovr views earth from the direction of the sun (from near the sun-earth ‘L1’ point), while Artemis is traveling towards the (nearly full) moon, thus looking back on earth from a very different angle.

Artemis II just dropped a new picture of Earth (Left). Hey @grok why do all these images of planet Earth from NASA all look entirely different? Please explain it to me like I’m five years old.

I'm not a flat earther but The size of Australia in the recent picture of Earth from the Artemis to rocket does not match the Google maps ball which does fit all the continents and is very accurate when it comes to proportion.

@peterrhague “Apple cider” very commonly sold in American grocery stores (even the “sparkling” kind) isn't alcoholic—which is all the “cider” that most people here encounter. Thus, I don't think most Americans think “tipsy” when they read “cider”.

Guess what! The real images aren't labeled “visualization”. Beyond that, of course one can't really see Artemis from outside, since there's no second spacecraft accompanying it to film it from.

@shellennessee @NASAEarth @Jessicagvan @astro_reid Earth's variation from pure sphericity is not noticeable to the eye. In the case of a larger, faster spinning planet, such as Saturn, the (oblate spheroid) polar flattening is (barely) visible. But in the case of earth, no.
