4) going onto a new topic (ish) but the first engine bought after this rift was 34073 from Barry Island Scrapyard in 1968. She was renamed Rebecca Qualtrough upon arrival, after the manager of the Sodor Land army in WW2. A much needed bolster to the Express locomotive fleet.

@bllueraspberry They both have their strengths and I really enjoy that both of them bring out a key feature of Gordon's Character, but in-show, Edward obviously provided more for other characters too, but if handled properly, so could Rebecca, so it's a bit of a tie

@ThomasSirHandel I hate to say it, because those were my childhood, but there is a different demand in childrens media today, they would never be the giants they were, even if they have some following, it wouldn't justify the high production costs. Thomas esp is better off as a legacy brand.

@Miniature_Mardy I feel like these three shows could work for a 4-12 age range if goes back to the classic writing style and Bob back to the old look. Could make normal Lego sets out of Fireman Sam and Classic Bob. Cars has the same 4-12 age group.

lowk this does bring up a good point. Obviously Thomas is targeted at 10 and under since its conception in the 40s. But the nature of kids shows today has meant that Thomas really doesn’t fit in anymore. It doesn’t fit in w preschool shows like it did 20 years ago

@NKSchwarzwalder this is exactly why I don’t want to be a full time driver. Having driven a few steam engines and working with narrow gauge and miniature engines, the sheer weight of the power and responsibility has scared me off completely. You’re doing so much better then I am!

I don't usually talk about my personal life as a train driver, but some of you just won't get it.
Besides taking the most invasive approach to drug tests, you're practically guiding a butcher on rails, seriously, how TF am I supposed to stop THIS under 5 seconds?!

@NorthWestRailCo @evelyas_outlet payne also didn’t. Thomas doesn’t exactly look like an E2 and there is no express communication between Payne and Awdry saying he drew him as an E2. It’s a misconception that Payne saw an E2 at Victoria, the E2s never worked there.

@SodorPro I think thomas is wholly marketed as a 10 and under show. The bachmann models are a great intro to model railways for youngens- I got my hornby thomas at 7. Don’t get me wrong, they are great models but they are NOT the same as real model trains.

@Miniature_Mardy I also the notion that Thomas is for older kids is also for the fact the Bachmann range exits. I don't know about you, but I don't think it's a good idea to let a 3 year old play with a Bachmann Gordon or N scale Thomas.

@NorthWestRailCo @evelyas_outlet i guess but its entirely arbitrary. With Flying Scotsman, Mallard etc I fully understand their cultural significance plays such a huge part in what they’re known for, but Awdry didn’t base Thomas on an E2. There is no feature of Thomas that is discernably E2-esque

@evelyas_outlet @NorthWestRailCo i guess I made a mistake in my language- but I don’t seem them having any unique traits which allow them to stand out compared to other brighton tanks- theres always a chance it could be someones fave but I think if it wasn’t for thomas they’d be consigned to history.

@Miniature_Mardy @NorthWestRailCo that's actually a very well said point, I agree and it makes sense. Though I'm sure it could still be somebody's favorite rather than best depending on how much they've immersed themselves and at what age they are at.
