On Friday morning, I met with about 50 members of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce for a wide-ranging discussion on current events—including the ongoing government shutdown. It was a productive, hour-long Q&A where I explained why I voted to keep the government open, while my colleague Tom Suozzi voted to shut it down. I made it clear: a shutdown hurts hardworking Americans. It hurts families who rely on SNAP and WIC to put food on the table. It hurts our troops and national security. And it hurts federal employees like those at Brookhaven National Laboratory and our air traffic controllers who keep our skies safe.
