Last September, a federal task force and National Guard support arrived in Memphis to address high crime rates, an effort that Memphis resident Dalisia Ballinger says let her family feel safe again.
But arrests only go so far without prosecution. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy's office decides which cases move forward, and a new Tennessee law requires his office to publicly report every case it reduces, dismisses or settles. Now, Mulroy is suing to strike down that law before it takes effect.
A petition is calling on Mulroy to drop the lawsuit and comply with the reporting requirement, arguing that transparency in law enforcement is a matter of public trust, and residents should not have to wonder which criminals walked.
