@SandyofCthulhu Between the manual and in-game, Doomguy's story is peak enough. Disobeyed a superior's order to fire on civilians, sent to Mars as punishment. He's Gordon Freeman's "right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world" before Gordon was conceptualised.

In 1993 I joined id Software. There was a Doom Bible written by Tom Hall, but I only ever got a brief skim of it. I think it was used by the artists and John Romero to some extent, but I didn't really access it. One of my jobs was actually to write the Doom manual. As part of that I had to name all the enemies. I didn't stretch my brain too far. I mean "Zombie" wasn't a tough call. I changed the "Bruiser Brothers" to "Hell Barons" so there's that. But I also had to create the Doom guy's backstory. I wrote about five entire pages of story, I discussed his previous career, why he was now embittered, what the corporate experiments on Phobos were about, and so forth. Then I started cutting back on the story. I thought it was too much, and who cared anyway? In the end, the final backstory I have is just 2 sentences. You show up on Phobos and there's monsters. But really, what else do you need? I view this as my greatest contribution to digital gaming. If you want to read text, get a book. Anyway if you love backstory, I'm the bad guy here. If you hate backstory, I'm your huckleberry.
