@holysmoke Could be of interest. As they say, “past is prologue” & as Faulkner wrote in Requiem for a Nun, "the past is never dead. It's not even past.”

@johnmilbank3 @JoshHochschild No one is confused about my stance toward an assassination attempt on the U.S. President, yet you think you’ve managed to pretend to confuse people about yours. Is that your real level? That’s not drivel, it’s dreadful, but “topoi” & all that.

@WalkerMarcus As a Catholic, I feel affirmed by your defense of a daytime or luncheon tipple. Unity achieved!

I am amused by the number of puritans jumping into my replies with variations on a theme of ‘and do YOU, a clergyman, drink at work? Do you?’ who seem blissfully unaware of what Holy Communion might involve. 🍷
Nick Wellings@Nick_Wellings

@WalkerMarcus Do you knock back a few when preaching? Maybe a quick tipple before you visit your flock? Bit of Dutch courage at a bedside? And at night? And at lunch? And at breakfast?

@PDevous No, I was as straight as one can be (in the interests of mercy and calming things down) when trying to thread the labyrinth of this world. But it is you who want to ignore the bends and corners of ethical reality. One shouldn’t try to think in technicolour about a grey world.

@johnmilbank3 @JoshHochschild It’s ok to post pro-assassination-adjacent comments as long as you use the word “topoi” in your post. It signals to the “smart people” you understand why a person they find offensive should be assassinated. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

@JoshHochschild Sure. ‘Liberal arts’ and you don’t like an appeal to the all-round topoi of a situation in coming to a judgment?

@johnmilbank3 What’s sinister is a Christian theologian trying to be coy about making pro-assassination-adjacent remarks & then pretending anyone who noticed was too intellectually inferior or rude to notice. Your remarks on this affair are creepy.

@PDevous Very silly. What is needed is for Trump somehow to be legitimately displaced. There are other sinister people in his admin but I doubt (bar Hegseth) any so dangerously deranged and unpredictable. Iran is achieving the exact opposite of what the US and the rest of us would like.

He says he’s totally uninterested in theological topics but then regularly yaps on from a great height about theological topics, especially if there’s something of an anti-Catholic edge to them.
Peter Hitchens@ClarkeMicah

Reluctantly, I share this interview, in which my questioner tries to get me to discuss philosophy and theology, two subjects in which I am wholly uninterested. Enjoy..’God, Animals, and New Atheism’| Peter Hitchens youtu.be/JE5gn0nEp0I?si… via @YouTube

@nypost They’ve seen softness in their tasting rooms because tastings in Napa have gotten ridiculously expensive & parsimonious in their offerings. It’s become an environment of ungracious luxury. I say that as a once regular Napa visitor and wine aficionado.

The Pope doesn’t have a “personal magisterium.” These guys just make things up. I do, however, remember many SJ’s rejecting the magisterium of the Church on numerous matters when Pope’s named John Paul & Benedict emphasized them.
Jeremy Zipple, SJ@jzipple

Sorry, Catholics, but Holy Mother Church teaches that you do have to submit to the personal magisterium of the Pope. Also “matter of potential judgment” does not mean “Pope has his little opinion; I have mine. Whateves.”

@MZHemingway @malmesburyman @Pontifex When journalists try to do theology it’s embarrassing. It’s like you don’t know many things have been said & done between the Church’s since 1563. If you don’t really know the subject matter you probably shouldn’t comment if your brand is “being in the know.”

@Pontifex Interesting that Lutherans such as myself are specifically anathematized under the Council of Trent for believing we are saved by faith in Christ alone but Algerian Muslims who forbid Christians from sharing that Gospel are in “communion” with Rome.

Communion between Christians and Muslims takes shape under the mantle of Our Lady of Africa. Here, in #Algeria, the maternal love of Lalla Meryem gathers everyone as children, within our rich diversity, in our shared aspiration for dignity, love, justice, and peace. In a world where division and wars sow pain and death, living in unity and peace is a compelling sign. #ApostolicJourney
