Bridget Phillipson blew £500,000 of taxpayers’ money trying to kill university free speech laws, was then legally challenged by the Free Speech Union – and lost. The High Court has ordered the Government to pay up. dailysceptic.org/2026/07/19/edu…

@OnTheWoolsack I’ve recently realised how Boris got round it. He was a Catholic to the Catholics (because they no longer recognise the ability to move to a different faith) and Anglican to the Established Church because we do recognise Confirmation in the CofE as marking a change.

The country’s basically being told by the Labour Party that we are going to take this man as our Prime Minister without any scrutiny and without any indication of where hr actually stands on anything. It’s very discomforting.

There is something epically arrogant about the new Prime Minister. Too grand to stand for election unless he is being elevated to PM; too grand to wear the normal clothes of a professional adult; too grand to be interviewed by the press; too grand to be questioned by Parliament.

@garydench Well yes. And I’m not exactly the world’s greatest fan of the reparations agenda. But hey…

Actually this is very similar to my take (and much better written and thought out than mine would have been!) @DuncanHegan1, in short, my reasons are these: 1. It’s all about civilizational collapse & the fragility of civilized life; 2. It has running through it not just the idea of the debts of obligation between the generations but the importance of the inheritance of ideas and a moral framework; 3. It’s a Christianised Odyssey - the ethics are those of the New Testament not Homer (which, in our culture, is right-coded).

@DrFrancisYoung I don’t understand this criticism. The gods are onmipresent, both in the fears and hopes the people have of them and in direct personal interaction with the cast.

Just seen The Odyssey and… wow. Probably the best film I’ve seen this decade.

@bjrhfe44 @WalkerMarcus Mate it’s got nothing to do with Islam, the government simply wants to give all English couples more choice when deciding their wedding ceremonies/celebrants/locations. You are falling for a paranoid and illiterate narrative

Mosques can, in fact, currently be legally registered for marriages. Given quite how little is required of mosques to be registered & how little is demanded in terms of legal vows & registration, I’d be very interested to know what is being relaxed in order to effect this claim

Removing the need for the parties contracting a marriage explicitly to state their consent is in no way going to blow up very quickly.
