What is the FIRST rule/theorem/formula that comes to mind when you think "I don't know why it works, I just memorized it" in regards to math class?

@howie_hua Synthetic division. I don't use it; no one uses it. But we all had to learn it in middle school for no reason.

I've come to realize that all of these nifty, illuminating math animations are in no way nifty or illuminating unless you *already understand* what it is they're trying to communicate.

@Jeff_Leader @LeeanneBranham @Mathgarden @Dean_of_math I guess my point is, it just saves everyone a lot of heartache if they've seen less but understood more, rather than the other way around. But I get that there are many different pressures at the HS level that I don't routinely deal with. (~fin~)

@Jeff_Leader @LeeanneBranham @Mathgarden @Dean_of_math Often, my S's were able to memorize just enough in HS to score well on standardized tests, then place into harder classes where they struggle because all they were trying to do was place into harder classes. (5/n)

Thanks for all the feedback! The general vibe I'm getting from these comments seems to be "🤷 Do whatever." And if there's one thing I can do, it's whatever.

Hey actual adults: If I did research as an undergrad (posters, no journal pubs), should I keep that on my CV now that I have real grown-up things on it?
