KALYAN: The body of a 13-year-old girl, who went missing on Monday after she stepped out of her house to buy snacks, was found on a deserted stretch on Kalyan-Padgha road on Tuesday. Police suspect that she was sexually assaulted.
Police suspect the involvement of a neighbour, who was arrested last year for allegedly molesting the girl. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
On Monday, around 4.30pm, the girl took Rs 20 from her mother and stepped out to buy snacks. When she did not return home till late in the evening, her mother started looking for her in the neighbourhood.
After being informed about his daughter's disappearance, the father rushed home from work and joined in the search. Later the couple lodged a missing person's complaint at Kolsewadi police station.
On Tuesday, Padgha police found the girl's body 13km away from her home, dumped in the bushes on a deserted road near the Bapgaon area. Police sources said that the girl was sexually assaulted before she was murdered. Padgha police sent the body to JJ Hospital for a post-mortem examination to confirm their suspicion.
