It's always funny when Americans pontificate about indigeneity without so much as a hint of self-awareness. The ancient Israelites were indigenous to Palestine. This is not seriously contested. According to the Old Testament, the Hebrews who preceded them originated in Mesopotamia rather than Palestine. This is however a matter of religious faith, not substantiated historical scholarship. The ancient Israelites by contrast have demonstrable origins in Palestine. It is also not seriously contested that prior to their emergence and during their existence multiple other peoples also originated and lived in the same territory, and were similarly indigenous to it. Yet none can today on this basis lay claim to the land or any rights within it, because claims of ancient title have no standing. This is for good reason. Imagine what the world would look like if every group could legitimately claim the lands where its presumed or even proven ancestors lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. More to the point, imagine a world in which they would claim exclusive rights of possession over such lands. Even in an alternate universe where claims of ancient title were recognized, those claiming descent from the ancient Israelites would not have exclusive or superior rights to any of their claimed territories, because the claims and rights of those asserting descent from the many other peoples of the same land would be recognized as equally valid. Some contemporary Jews - a small minority - are also indigenous to this territory. Many others are not, but have acquired rights as a result of immigration and settlement over several generations. As in the Americas, Australia, and southern Africa, colonial origins is not a legitimate justification for mass expulsion. By the same token, their rights do not in any way supersede those of the indigenous population they displaced and dispossessed, and certainly cannot be exercised at their expense. The majority of contemporary Jews are neither indigenous to the land, nor have any rights there for the simple reason that they have no physical connection to it.
