@scottphorton It would end a lot of the litigation currently going on. I don’t necessarily think the other “problems” are real problems. Yes, it’s more expensive to run an athletics department now that labor can be paid. But that’s just reality.

Agree with Dan that a narrow eligibility bill has a chance of passing through Congress. Something that limits college eligibility to 5 seasons and/or has an age limit would likely have sufficient support. The issues arise when you start adding limits on athlete comp & movement.
Dan Wetzel@DanWetzel

For the NCAA, a narrow eligibility bill is the way to go. It also has a chance to actually pass. Transfer limits are an issue (and yes, Tuberville is a comical advocate due to his constant job changes as a coach) but this is where the debate should be. Most proposals are a waste.

@RedditCFB What’s not phenomenal is their lack of support for their baseball team. It’s played 5 home games, but only one has been on TV. MAC teams have better coverage .

@Monty2740 Can you try to amplify this with other media colleagues? Its not acceptable for a university if this caliber to do this.

It’s a loaded ACC slate today with border wars, in-state rivalries, and big matchups. What game are you most excited to watch today?

@AndyStaples Is it really? They're not restricting whether a player can transfer or how much he can be paid - only when and how he can be contacted. How is that an antitrust violation?

This will be an interesting vote. Proposed penalties are severe, but they would affect coaches and athletic dept budgets and not players individually. But it’s tough to believe it would hold up in court. It’s still competitors colluding to limit a labor market.
Pete Nakos@PeteNakos

The NCAA D-I Cabinet has called a meeting for next week and is expected to vote on blind-transfer legislation, sources tell @On3. The meeting was added to the calendar to vote before most FBS programs wrap up their spring practices. Details: on3.com/news/ncaa-d-i-…

@mark_hokie @AndyStaples The problem is they can't restrict student athletes from doing something that a regular student can do. A regular student or a walk-on can leave one school and go to another with no repercussions. It doesn't change because they're getting paid. That's not how legality works

@AaronGogley @WinterSportsLaw It’s a private organization. You’re not entitled to play football. Also, every player signs an agreement at the start of the year to abide by NCAA bylaws.

They’re trying to get around the legal issue by framing it as a penalty on the school but it’s a transfer restriction on an athlete. It’s also my opinion the portal windows are also a transfer restriction and is illegal but nobody has sued over that yet. Even in the pros a team can only limit players if they’re under contract or under specific conditions.

Assuming this proposal to prevent “blind transfers” is approved, more litigation against the NCAA will probably be on the way soon. Attempting to operate college football like the NFL doesn’t work when there is no legal protection for the rules limiting player movement.

Interesting Title IX development: Pacific Legal Foundation just filed a petition asking DOE to repeal the 1979 Title IX athletics guidance—arguing “substantial proportionality” has morphed into a quota system that drives cuts to men’s teams & conflicts with IX and Constitution.
