@orchid_b The pink and reds are always at the top, and when the aurora is closer, looking up it is harder to see the pinks through the green. Because they are distant, we are more able to see the tops of the columns because of our viewing angle here in the UK. That's my thinking anyway.

Pink aurora query: The first time I saw this was c1999 in Suffolk, driving to Norfolk, watching it grow from yellow on horizon to pink overhead. Like recent pics the North was green . Since then I’ve read that the pink auroras are very rare. The ones I’ve seen in the Arctic/…
