Today is Gary Plauché Day. On March 16, 1984, as Jeff Doucet, the man who kidnapped and sexually assaulted Gary’s son, was escorted through the Baton Rouge Airport, Gary Plauché waited by payphones. As Doucet passed, Plauché turned and fatally shot him with a .38 revolver. This was all captured by a local news crew and broadcast widely as vigilante justice. Plauché pleaded no contest to manslaughter and received a seven-year suspended sentence, five years probation, and 300 hours community service.
