Adam G. Kinser was one of the greatest men I’ve ever known. He died in Operation Enduring Freedom January 29, 2004. He was one of best friends and I still miss him so much. Prayers for all of the gold star families and everyone who had to endure the pain of war. 🇺🇸

On this Memorial Day, I want to remember CW2 Jon Farmer. I met him in 2010 when were both in the same company. He was a fresh faced SSG and just out of the schoolhouse. A former college basketball player, he was such a big guy that the only place he fit in a Humvee was in the turret. I had the honor of mentoring him in some of the specialized work we do. When we went to Afghanistan in 2012, we switched jobs and I can say without reservation that he was one of the few guys I taught that was better at what we did than I was. After I left the Army, he went Warrant so he could get more time on a team and be a mentor to HIS guys. But things happen even to the best of us. He was on a mission in Basij, Syria in 2019 and somehow ISIS managed to get suicide bomber in a room with him and two other Americans. To my knowledge, he is the last Green Beret to officially fall in the Global War on Terror (correct me if I'm wrong). He leaves behind a beautiful wife, four amazing kids and a legacy most of us in 5th Group will never forget.

On Memorial Day, I remember Delta Force operator Bob Horrigan. Bob died June 17, 2005 during a raid on a compound loaded with terrorists loyal to Zarqawi. It was his last deployment, and he was getting ready to retire.

On Memorial Day, I remember Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart. During Black Hawk Down, they inserted into a crash site to save pilot Mike Durant. Both men died after a prolonged gunfight that saved Durant’s life. Both earned the Medal of Honor.

A friend of mine Aaron Henderson. I was on a dive Team with him for a few months until I came to the discovery that being a Diver absolutely wasn’t for me. Aaron wasn’t only a diver, but was such a straight up GB that after he was killed 5th GRP (A) discovered in his wishes that every picture in his memorial service be him with a beard. Group honored his demands. He volunteered to deploy to AFG with an ODA that was short a man. We lost him to an IED in Zombalay Village. He was the best of us, selfless and a wonderful family man.

Today I want to honor my hero, Staff Sgt. Scott Studenmund. A former Pomona-Pitzer football player turned Green Beret whose courage, leadership, and sacrifice continue to inspire so many. He gave his life serving our country in Afghanistan in 2014. Heroes live forever. 🇺🇸

James Abell, far right, did the single bravest thing I ever saw someone do in combat. We were ambushed from both sides of the road and above us near the Balad Market in March 2006. During the ambush SPC Bradley Hayes was shot in the head through the door of his vehicle - after which his vehicle left the road and crashed into the patio of a nearby house. Hayes was driving the vehicle behind mine and when I heard his vehicle mate screaming in the radio that he’d been hit, I went back for him. As I was getting out of my vehicle I told my gunner “Cover me. I’m going for him.” Abell, who was sitting behind me because the night before his vehicle had been destroyed when an IED went off between us, said “Sir, do you want me to go with you.” My initial thought was no. I was the leader and it was my responsibility. I didn’t want to put him in any more danger than he was already in. But after a moment, knowing I would likely need some help, I said “Yes. Grab the aid & litter bag.” I meant combat lifesaver bag, which was immediately behind Abell’s head inside the vehicle, but I said aid & litter bag. I took off for Hayes and Abell climbed up on the back of our vehicle, completely exposing himself in the midst of the ambush, pulled out his pocket knife, cut off the litter, and brought it to me & Hayes. He did it because his Captain told him to. In the years that have followed that night I have come to realize he did it for me. He did it because I told him to. He trusted me. Trying to live a life worthy of that everyday is a helluva thing. Abell died in a car accident four years later. I’ll never forget the phone call from our 1SG telling me the news. I cried like a baby. I still think of Abell everyday…I really do. I still try to live a life worthy of who believed I was…I really do. I’ve been a soldier for 32 years and without question the people are the best part. Along the way you get to serve with the James Abell’s of the world… and life doesn’t get any better than that. Have a meaningful weekend.

This Memorial Day I Remember Heroes like my classmate Tim Hankins. Tim did more tours than anyone should have. Why? Because he said his men needed him. Tim had multiple Purple Hearts and went back for more. Tim lost his battle to his demons. Love you brother! #Turn22To0

Tara Thomas, the widow of U.S. Army Green Beret Warrant Officer Shawn Thomas, shared a deeply emotional moment captured in a heartbreaking video. The video was taken in February 2017 at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina. It shows Tara approaching and leaning her head on her husband’s flag-draped coffin after it was unloaded from a plane. The video went viral after a passenger on the plane, Lisa West Williams, recorded and shared it with Tara’s permission. Tara wanted to raise awareness about the daily struggles faced by military families. This powerful and poignant video serves as a testament to the sacrifices made by service members and their Gold Star families.
