Dear @DeborahMeaden, You asked for examples of people who have faced serious consequences for expressing lawful opinions in the UK. The replies to @EssexPR’s post provide many. Among those mentioned are a children’s author, a barrister, a senior journalist, a poet, a dance company founder, a social worker, a university professor, a comedy writer and a doctor. In many of these cases, people lost work or livelihoods, or were subjected to legal or criminal proceedings, after expressing lawful views relating to biological sex. Many of those affected are also self-employed. As a businesswoman yourself, you’ll appreciate the added vulnerability that brings - there are no tribunals, no HR processes and no safety net. I’m one of them. As a self-employed business owner, I lost my livelihood after saying I didn’t like the phrase “pregnant people.” I lost clients, business connections, long-standing service providers and income. My reputation was ‘smeared’ to the point that, at 51, I’m having to restart my career. Like many others who find themselves in this position, I’m now seeking funding to meet my own legal costs. Even if views differ on other matters, I hope you’ll read the replies and recognise that Adam Brooks is right on this point. And that expressing lawful views relating to biological sex can carry serious and enduring professional consequences - particularly for self-employed women. Women in this position need meaningful support.

@RoyLilley Wonder if @wesstreeting will read this! So true, reorganisation of NHSE is profligate - offering ALL staff voluntary redundancy without trying to ensure they keep the people they need shows huge incompetence.

I have just been informed that the highly respected Board of the Kennedy Center, some of the most successful people from all parts of the world, have just voted unanimously to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center, because of the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building. Not only from the standpoint of its reconstruction, but also financially, and its reputation. Congratulations to President Donald J. Trump, and likewise, congratulations to President Kennedy, because this will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of success and grandeur.

Why can't people understand it's not the doctors causing the problems on the NHS, but chronic underfunding by the government?

@parthaskar Doctors were well paid and respected when they were all posh white men, don't think it is just racism which has led to the way doctors are treated now, but is probably a contributary factor.

@SocialistHB @michaeljswalker Doctors have had their pay eroded more than anyone else. Probably because Agenda for Change staff rates are underpinned by minimum wage, so relatively high paid public sector workers are easier targets.

@GBNEWS Drs are not unique when it comes to oat erosion. The whole public sector has had real term wage reductions of 24%, but we’re not all demanding immediate pay restoration. Yes Drs deserve more pay, but so does care workers, nurses, bin men, and lots of others in the public sector.

@OliverRyanUK That "grasping self-interested pressure group" who were some of the highest achieving students, paid £14/hr for stressful job after 5-6 years of intense training are now paid £18/hr. An ST4 who will operate on your loved ones is paid £250 for an 8 hour day. Still underpaid.

Never mind shooting themselves in the foot, they're shooting the NHS in the head, putting the organisations future & its patients (my constituents) at risk. They're the worst kind of grasping self-interested pressure group. They got 29% last year & are inexplicably back for more!

I've written this open letter to @Keir_Starmer & @wesstreeting because, though I am desperately worried about NHS patients over the next 5 days, I know this strike by resident doctors is a desperate act of last resort. Please read.

In England as of 2025: - Average classroom teacher salary: ~£43,400 (median, per DfE). - Average doctor salary: ~£80,000–£100,000 (varies; juniors £53k–£74k, consultants £110k–£145k, per NHS). - Average headteacher salary: ~£75,000 (primary ~£78k, secondary ~£105k, per various reports). - Average senior NHS consultant salary: ~£127,000 (range £110k–£145k, per BMA). Strikes will GO AHEAD from 17-22 December, after resident doctors in England voted overwhelmingly to reject the latest offer from @wesstreeting.
