You cannot claim the constitutional authority of Commander in Chief acting in American self-defence and simultaneously tell your ally “your mission is being executed with unmatched skill.” The six American reservists killed in Kuwait on day one died in someone else’s mission according to the Secretary of Defence’s own public statement. Every family of every American service member deployed to this conflict now has documented cause to ask whose mission their son or daughter is executing. “A breath of fresh air” is the phrase that will age the worst. The Haifa refinery is burning. Kuwait is in force majeure. Oil is approaching $90. Iran still has 50 percent of its ballistic missile programme intact per classified Congressional briefings. American soldiers have reportedly been captured. The World Uncertainty Index is at an all-time high. Eighteen intelligence agencies said the stated objectives were unachievable before the first bomb fell. A breath of fresh air. History will have a very particular view of that sentence.
