𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗖 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗔 𝗡𝗣𝗟 This week, Neil Kilkenny announced his retirement from professional football, closing out a remarkable career that included spells at Leeds United, Melbourne City, and Perth Glory. At 39, he finishes at Sorrento FC, where he helped the club achieve immortality last season. Kilkenny’s leadership, experience, and intangibles are irreplaceable, but what about his actions? For that, we turn to data. Radars are Ben Griffis Data is Wyscout As always, feedback appreciated

@WarnieDT Would it be possible to put the live overall score for Overall Rank 1, 100, 1k and 10k. (Personally would find this more useful then the round score)

@Jesse_Way My god. How fucked is it to watch 5 out of 6 defenders feasting, and the one guy who they wanted to use all last week and in pre season, just sits there open getting burnt over and over again.

Coaches who had Grlj on field, who did you bench? Serong? Blakiston? 🤔 I'm actually curious.

I’ve stated something. Non top tier clubs deserve advanced analytics without the need for full time data teams or 6 figure budgets for data subscriptions. Upside Intelligence is for clubs who want to work with data, but don’t know where to start. Find out more here upsideintelligence.net

@KevEastSports @BouafifNour Yah, which is better than raw xg, but neither should be used for anything other than a snapshot.

@TacticalFool @BouafifNour xG measures the chance of a goal being scored at the moment the ball is hit with varying factors affecting the result. PSxG / xGOT measures the quality of the shot itself after the ball has left the the player.

Yeah, because xg measures shots, which come from great chance creation. What you explained is what’s called noise. Those events are less common than actual output. Which is why everyone hates on xG because a lot of the media simplify it down to “who should win”. This is when people hate on it. Because it should never be used like that.

@TacticalFool @BouafifNour What I hate about xG where xGOT dont help aswell: if a striker missing 6 low crosses by 1mm shoesize to put it into en empty net cause the gk wouldnt have any time to react, its 0xg. If a long ball a keeper gets 1mm before the striler, its 0xG.

This is from a piece I published last January, where I interviewed "Darcy", an analyst at an AFL club. One year later, a head coach is openly talking about how they use AI in their workflow. (I wonder how Darcy would feel about their head coach using AI for oppo analysis.)

People at Hawthorn say AI has become Sam Mitchell’s new obsession. He uses it daily to help in his game preparation… from opposition analysis and game trends, to creating conversation starters with his players:

In the xG era, we have repeatedly been told that goals from outside the box are an unsustainable way to score – but is that really the case? There are other factors too, and in a world of deep blocks and organised defences, having a pop from distance may be an increasingly sensible thing to do @Conor0Neill_ 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/70209…

@mixedknuts I've learned a lot from all these comments so thank you! I just hope people understand and use XG correctly, and don't pin all their hopes on it when gambling. It's not 'very' accurate, when predicting the future. Although agreed, I realise, maybe better than some other options?

This is actually an interesting thread of conversation where everyone is probably a little wrong, but strongly directional in the middle about expected goals and how they are used. xG basically started as a gambling metric. (Unless you use Reep as your origin, but I don't.)
Danny Peacock@dannypea

@12Xpert @Soccermatics XG is a metric designed for coaches to optimise maximum goalscoring potential from players and on field locations. Better players will obviously have higher XG, so you don't need XG to work out that better players will win more matches, the stats will always back the best teams!

@utdAdams Also not remembering Chelsea breaking FIFA laws by transferring 12-15 years olds to their academy and playing “friendlies” because their parents conviniently just happened to move from Sweden, Belgium, or whatever country to the richest part of London somehow.

United don’t platform their academy players properly. At Chelsea there’s a clear pathway: smart, progressive loan moves, a solid opportunity of real development to build stock which garners the chance to either break into the first team if worthy or a £30m transfer elsewhere due to being established talents. Even the ones who don’t make it still end up with solid careers. At United, it’s a joke by comparison. A youth player gets overhyped, sent on a six month loan to a random Football League club halfway through the season where the priority isn’t to give them a chance or time to develop. Player comes back, sits in the U23s, and watches their value and momentum disappear. Then they quietly leave for some obscure club and vanish from the conversation. Cycle repeats. Yet we’re called fake fans for not caring about the academy when the club itself barely does? Hugill wasted 5 years at this club. This is not the United Way.
