Daycare isn't expensive when you break down the amount per hour per week. If you pay $1600 per month for one child for a 40 hour work week that is only $10 per hour. The real argument is about who should pay for it. But there isn't really a way for childcare to get much cheaper.

The blue states in the image below have electricity prices that are as much as 4x the electricity rates of the red states. This is not due to any technological inferiority in those blue states but specific policy decisions that have driven competition out and prices up.

“That’s hurtful to hear that… I would love for anyone making that accusation to walk in these doors and ask any player, coach, or trainer… Those are harmful things. @JoshLipnik This doesn’t make a lot of sense. From St. Louis you can get to Chicago, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Memphis, and Nashville in 4 hours.

Underrated factor is how isolated St. Louis is. Basically no major cities within a 4 hour drive. Detroit you can get to Toronto, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh within 3-4 hours.

One way to narrow this question: why has Detroit's decline paused, while St. Louis' decline proceeds full speed ahead? Off the top of my head, they have a lot of the same constraints and opportunities, yet Detroit seems to he in much better shape.
