Singapore is one of Australia’s most important fuel suppliers, helping to keep our economy and people moving. Today, Prime Minister @LawrenceWongST and I agreed to make maximum efforts to deliver energy security for both our nations. Because the war in the Middle East might be a long way from here, but it’s having impacts across our region. And the best way to deal with this is by working together, as partners and neighbours.

In a few weeks, the Senate will vote on the ASIO Amendment Bill (No. 2)—and every Australian who values freedom under the law should be paying attention. This Bill doesn’t just extend extraordinary powers—it makes them permanent. Powers that were meant to expire by March 2027 would instead become ongoing. It expands compulsory questioning for adults and even minors, weakens safeguards, limits access to legal counsel, and lacks proper judicial oversight. These are not ordinary powers. They allow the state to compel answers under threat of penalty. That is a serious intrusion into personal liberty. Of course, national security matters—but it must never come at the unchecked expense of freedom. For these reasons, I will NOT be supporting this Bill. Fuel security means drilling, refining and storing fuel - and we’re determined to lead the country and make it happen. Taroom Trough will be the first oil field developed in Australia for half a century.
