Don't be fooled: renewables are NOT REPLACING fossil fuels, they're ADDING to them. Emissions are at record levels and rising, and global warming is accelerating. What matters for the climate is fossil fuel consumption, not how fast renewables are growing.

Jeez. Labour MP’s have just voted to give police unprecedented powers to ban recurring protests turning a fundamental freedom into a privilege granted by the state. No protest movement has ever brought about change through one single march or action - it’s precisely the cumulative nature of protest that has resulted in progressive change and held governments to account. More than 40 civil society groups including the TUC joined forces to oppose this draconian crackdown by the government on our rights to freedom of expression and assembly but the government has driven it through anyway. How did it come to this?
Peter Stefanovic@PeterStefanovi2

🚨THIS WEEK MP’S WILL VOTE ON A BILL TO GIVE POLICE UNPRECEDENTED POWERS TO BAN RECURRING PROTESTS TURNING A FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOM INTO A PRIVILEGE GRANTED BY THE STATE We cannot allow this government to create a society where protest is treated as a privilege granted by the state rather than a right held by the people. The right to protest is precious and must be defended. ITS NOT TOO LATE to stop this shocking and shameful attack on our fundamental right to protest. More than 40 civil society groups including the TUC and Greenpeace have joined forces to oppose this draconian crackdown on our right to freedom of expression and assembly - and you can help too by CONTACTING YOUR MP RIGHT NOW - tag them to this film and and ask them to oppose this

NHS staff have been told they might lose their jobs if they criticise NHS England’s controversial £330m contract with IDF-contractor Palantir. According to the FT, an analytics officer who had raised concerns about Palantir’s Federal Data Platform (FDP) was told by a senior NHS official: “If you criticise the FDP one more time, you are going to lose your job.” “I know I am not the only one inside the NHS who has been warned off criticising the tool publicly,” the analytics officer added. In January 2024, Palantir announced a strategic partnership with the Israeli government to support “war-related missions”, meaning its tools are being used in a genocide. It also provides technology to immigration enforcement in the US, and founder Peter Thiel has provided financial backing to Donald Trump. Citing ethical concerns, the British Medical Association (BMA) has instructed union members not to adopt Palantir’s Federal Data Platform. In February, BMA chair Tom Dolphin told the British Medical Journal: “Given Palantir’s track record, including controversies in the US involving immigration enforcement and the risks to patient trust, data security, and NHS independence, we believe there must be a complete break from Palantir technologies in the NHS and no further contracts awarded.” But staff told the FT that NHS organisations are under pressure to sign up voluntarily to the Palantir data system. Technicians working on alternative systems have been told to stop in their tracks. “When letters go out saying, ‘Sign this or we’ll call your chief executive’, that doesn’t build goodwill,” said an analytics official. “It creates compliance, not commitment.” Palantir boasts contracts across British public services, with its technology already embedded in the police and the military. Last month, two anonymous Ministry of Defence officials told journalists at the Nerve that Palantir’s deepening knowledge of the British state poses “a national security threat to the UK”. 123 out of 205 NHS hospital trusts have already adopted Palantir’s data system.

Nail on head time. Today govt announced that 6 water companies are getting to walk away from 20 separate criminal prosecutions, that's up to 5 years in jail, unlimited fines and the proceeds of crime legislation applies, you can start seizing houses, cars etc. Take Severn Trent, annual revenues £2.4 billion. Today for a payment of £4.6 million they get to walk away from 6 separate prosecutions. Bargain as they say.

Pollution shouldn’t happen. Whilst on face value this is a +47% increase there will be some wondering if this matches or is proportionate to the scale of the issue, and water company profits: gov.uk/government/new…

In case people missed this story over the weekend ... you may well have, as it has not been touched by the media. Reform UK engineered a competition in which they are treating an entire street in Wigan to around £80,000. It's DEFINITELY just a coincidence that the winners are long time Farage fans, Ray and June — who ALSO nominated Lee Moffitt for the branch chair position of Reform Wigan. Moffitt is in the promo videos thanking June, by the way. DEFINITELY just a coincidence though. 🤷‍♂️
Don McGowan@donmcgowan

Today I broke a story [with help from @linfitlass] about Reform UK potentially fixing their competition to provide energy bills to a whole street. It's a big deal and should, by rights, be picked up by mainstream media. Luckily, there's one proper, reliable news outlet that have and are publishing my full article on Monday. Obvs its Byline Times. But … why have the BBC, Sky News etc. missed this? I'm not blowing my own trumpet at all, but so far, the story has had over 1.5 million views on my 𝕏 feed today. A genuine public interest story about a potential fraudulent attempt by a political party, but it's being ignored, as always ... because it's Farage. This is serious. Aside from Byline Times, The Nerve and the New World, the rest have capitulated to the far-right and Bannon's play. If any outlets want to discuss this story, you know where I am. x.com/donmcgowan/sta…

#Offshoring is an outrage - especially when it comes to the surplus from public services...
Dr Rachel Clarke@doctor_oxford

Today @CHPIthinktank published a singularly depressing analysis of 760 private firms now providing NHS services in England such as CT scans, hip and knee replacements & mental health support. Companies like Spire & Circle are creaming off billions from these lucrative NHS contracts. £2bn of £12bn worth of contracts went to firms with owners based outside the UK. £533m of this £2bn went to companies owned by people living in tax havens such as Jersey and the Cayman Islands. I find it grotesque that while NHS patients are stranded on trolleys in corridors or waiting months or even years for care, taxpayers’ money is being siphoned off into offshore tax havens & lining the pockets of private equity companies. The government *could* be investing in growing NHS capacity – instead, it has elected to grow private companies’ grip on the NHS, a short-term folly that is already costing patients dear. Madness.
