The Marines were created to stop pirates. That is what they do best. The ship they are sending to support them has the same capabilities as a small aircraft carrier, so they will be able to defend themselves from missile attacks. Drones were not used when I was active duty so I am not very familiar with that technology but I am sure they have something they can use to defend themselves. Lowering premiums will not happen as long as there is an active war zone. Once the first ships are through with their Marine escorts I think more ships will come through.

How do Marine infantry stop missile and drone attacks coming from within Iran? How do they get the companies who insure oil tankers to lower the premiums (which have risen 650% since the war started) How do they convince ship captains to risk traversing the Strait if the threat of missile attack still exists?

I don’t think they are being sent in as ground troops. I think they will continue the sea and air mission by controlling the Sraight of Hormuz. That island is small enough that daily intel can tell if any build up is happening and they can send a bomber out and stop it. The Straight of Hormuz on the other hand needs infantry men and that’s what Marines do best.

It took 10,000 Marines and 6 weeks to win the Second Battle of Fallujah against a bunch of mostly untrained jihadis armed with Soviet era weapons and improvised explosives. Will someone please explain how 2500 Marines will end a war with a million strong trained military force armed with more modern equipment, satellite imagery capabilities, drone based weaponry and a stockpile of missiles and rockets at their disposal? Not trying to come off as someone who is shitting on the Marine Corps, but they’re not superhuman.

Do you know the history of the Marine Corps? Marines aren’t ground troops. They were established as a sea bound infantry unit to protect ships. They alone almost eliminated pirates back in the day. It appears to me they will be used to help ships navigate the Straight of Hormuz. I’m no military analyst but I know enough about military history to know they won’t be used for a ground invasion. Each branch of service has its specialties so if you see Army being deployed, then you will see ground forces. This Marine unit will be sea and air not ground.

Trump is sending in 5,000 ground troops to the Gulf. Marine expeditionary unit will be able to conduct ground operations. Several more warships and F-35s are on the way, too. I thought they said this was supposed to be easy and they weren't going to use ground troops. Here we go.
