Absolute panic in NATO. An expert journalist confirms Italian PM Giorgia Meloni rushed to the Gulf because Trump's disastrous Iran war has blocked critical energy routes. With 25 percent of their supply at risk, Italy is terrified of running out of energy completely.

I'm hearing from a very reliable source that Trump is preparing to use his DOJ to target multiple Democratic congressional candidates with fraud-related prosecutions ahead of the midterms, all in an effort to help preserve a Republican majority. The goal does not seem to be securing convictions. It seems to be creating just enough suspicion in the minds of voters that some stay home on Election Day or choose the Republican candidate instead. Meanwhile, many Republicans seem entirely unbothered by the fact that Trump himself was found liable for fraud and has pardoned more than a dozen convicted fraudsters. Their concern does not appear to be fraud itself, but the political value of accusing others of it.

🇺🇸James Carville, a longtime Democratic strategist, went straight at Trump, no filter. He’s basically saying Trump doesn’t see what’s coming yet, but when it hits, it’s going to hit hard. From there, he walks through how things start slipping. Calls stop getting answered. People around him slowly start backing off. On the surface it might look normal, but behind it, investigations are already kicking in. And those don’t stay small. He says they follow the money, pull in family, and dig into everything tied to him. Then it just builds. More legal trouble, even outside the U.S., less protection, and allies slowly turning. At the same time, old records and documents start coming out. Step by step, the picture he paints is Trump getting more isolated, with fewer people around him and more pressure closing in.

🦔 About half of the US data centers planned to open in 2026 are expected to be delayed or canceled, according to analysts at Sightline Climate. Of the 12 gigawatts of data center capacity announced for this year, only a third is actually under construction. The problem is not money or ambition but electrical components. Transformers, switchgear, and batteries make up less than 10% of data center construction costs but are impossible to build without. US manufacturing cannot meet demand so builders have been sourcing from China, Canada, Mexico, and South Korea. Transformer delivery times have stretched to as long as five years. US imports of high-power transformers from China jumped from fewer than 1,500 in all of 2022 to more than 8,000 in the first ten months of 2025 alone. My Take This is the physical reality underneath the AI infrastructure announcements and it deserves more attention than it gets. Hyperscalers have committed over $650 billion in AI infrastructure spending this year. The Atlantic piece I shared last week laid out how the supply chain for this buildout runs directly through the Middle East and China. This story is the electrical component version of the same problem. The US cannot build the data centers it has announced because it cannot manufacture the parts fast enough, and the parts it can get come primarily from China, the country it is simultaneously trying to decouple from through tariffs. The numbers get more difficult the further out you look. For data centers planned to open in 2027, only 6.3 gigawatts are under construction against 21.5 gigawatts announced. For 2028 through 2032 the vast majority haven't broken ground. There is a growing gap between what has been promised to investors and what is physically being built, and that gap sits underneath valuations that assume the buildout happens on schedule. Hedgie🤗

JUST IN: Iran’s Foreign Minister posted five sentences on X on April 4 that should have stopped every government in the Gulf. “Israel-U.S. have bombed our Bushehr plant four times now. Radioactive fallout will end life in GCC capitals, not Tehran.” He compared it to Western outrage over Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine and accused the attackers of double standards. The IAEA confirmed the fourth strike: a projectile hit near the site, one guard killed, a support building damaged. No radiation increase was detected. The containment held. This time. The physics of why the fallout would reach Riyadh and not Tehran is geography that no amount of diplomacy can change. Bushehr sits on the Persian Gulf coast at 28 degrees north. Tehran is 750 kilometres inland, shielded by the Zagros Mountains. The prevailing winter winds blow from the northwest to the southeast, directly across the Gulf toward the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The anticlockwise surface currents of the Gulf carry waterborne radionuclides westward and northwestward toward the head of the Gulf, reaching Kuwait and Bahrain within approximately 15 days according to peer-reviewed hydrodynamic simulations. Atmospheric dispersion models run 3,652 HYSPLIT simulations for a Bushehr release scenario and found that deposition exceeding relocation thresholds reached Gulf coastal areas with low but non-zero probability. The plume does not go north. It goes west. The reactor sits on Iran’s coast but the fallout belongs to the Gulf. This matters because the Gulf states get their drinking water from the Gulf. Qatar relies on desalination for 99 percent of its supply. Kuwait and Bahrain for 90 percent. Saudi Arabia for 70. The UAE for 42. Desalination plants draw intake directly from the Gulf. If that water carries Caesium-137 or Iodine-131, the plants shut down or the output is contaminated. Gulf states maintain roughly one week of strategic water reserves. A Bushehr breach would not produce a Chernobyl explosion. It would produce something the models describe as worse for the region: a slow, invisible contamination of the water supply that 60 million people depend on, arriving by current over two weeks, with seven days of reserves to outlast it. The countries that would be contaminated are the same countries hosting the forces conducting the strikes. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar launches the sorties. Al Dhafra in the UAE stages the overflow troops sleeping in hotels. Bahrain’s 5th Fleet headquarters coordinates the naval component. Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base, where an E-3 AWACS was destroyed on the ground by Iranian fire on March 27, sits in the Eastern Province that the fallout models identify as a primary deposition zone. The allies are hosting the bombers. The bombers are hitting the reactor. The reactor sits on the coast of the water the allies drink. And the enemy is the one warning them. Araghchi’s message was not aimed at Washington. It was aimed at Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Doha, Manama, and Kuwait City. The subtext is not subtle: you are hosting the war that could poison your water. The IAEA says no radiation has been released. The containment has held through four strikes. But containment is engineering, not physics. Engineering can fail. And when Araghchi says “not Tehran,” he is stating a geographic fact that the Gulf Cooperation Council cannot dismiss regardless of how many times the IAEA says the readings are normal. The reactor is not near Tehran. It is near them. open.substack.com/pub/shanakaans…

IAEA - International Atomic Energy Agency ⚛️@iaeaorg

The IAEA has been informed by Iran that a projectile struck close to the premises of the Bushehr NPP this morning, the fourth such incident in recent weeks. Iran also informed the IAEA that one of the site’s physical protection staff members was killed by a projectile fragment and that a building on site was affected by shockwaves and fragments. No increase in radiation levels was reported. IAEA DG @rafaelmgrossi expresses deep concern about the reported incident and says NPP sites or nearby areas must never be attacked, noting that auxiliary site buildings may contain vital safety equipment. Reiterating call for maximum military restraint to avoid risk of a nuclear accident, DG Grossi again stresses the paramount importance of adhering to the 7 pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during a conflict.

Had drinks with 30 CTOs last night at an off-the-record gathering in Palo Alto Every single one showed me the same internal PowerPoint slide "2026 AI Headcount Targets: Path to 70% Cost Reduction" The numbers will make you physically sick Fintech CTO planning to cut 280-person engineering org down to 43 "AI orchestrators" by September. Same product roadmap. Same delivery expectations. Healthcare CTO already eliminated his entire manual QA department. 67 people. Replaced with 3 senior engineers running autonomous testing agents that ship code directly to production. SaaS CTO walked me through his "human depreciation timeline": 340 engineers today, 89 planned for 2027. Customer support going from 120 humans to 12 "escalation specialists" managing AI conversations. The most chilling part: they're all using the exact same consulting deck from McKinsey called "The 30% Organization" One CTO literally said "hiring humans for code is like hiring horses for transportation" Another showed me Slack screenshots where his L7s are asking if they should train their replacements The consensus was unanimous: if you can't manage 10 AI agents by Christmas, you're not making it to New Year's Every single one of them is planning to announce these cuts as "AI transformation success stories" While their stock options vest at record highs built on the backs of workers they're about to execute The future of engineering is 3 humans with 50 AI agents in a WeWork somewhere while 500 families lose their homes
