Fusion energy has entered a new phase, with major technical advancements, growing investments, and concrete national strategies to support the path to deployment. At @Fusion_Industry’s Annual Policy Conference in Washington DC 🇺🇸 today, I highlighted how this momentum brings both opportunity and complexity, as governments, research institutes, private companies, industry and international organisations come together to shape the future of fusion energy. Through initiatives like the @IAEAorg’s World Fusion Energy Group, we are creating a global platform where all players come together to address and engage on concrete topics and align efforts on R&D, regulation, financing, supply chain, and workforce development. With strong cooperation across public and private initiatives, fusion has the potential to become an important part of the global energy system in the years to come and the Agency is here to support every step of the way. La Belgique a accueilli le tout premier Sommet sur l’énergie nucléaire en 2024, contribuant à créer l’élan que nous constatons aujourd’hui ici au #NES2026 en France. Good exchange with Energy Minister @BIHETMathieu on nuclear energy developments in 🇧🇪, including lifetime extensions and innovation. Agreed to work together to support Belgium’s plans to strengthen nuclear power, with the @IAEAorg ready to assist all the way.

Good to meet @uzatomagency’s Azim Akhmedkhadjaev at #NES2026 as Uzbekistan moves forward with plans for its nuclear energy plans, including its first nuclear power plant and SMRs. Based on the roadmap agreed since my visit to 🇺🇿, the @IAEAorg stands ready to support the country as it advances these plans in a safe and secure way.

Türkiye is moving forward with its nuclear power programme, with Akkuyu NPP representing a major step for the country’s energy future. Reiterated to @TCEnerji’s Energy Minister @aBayraktar1 at #NES2026 the @IAEAorg’s readiness to support 🇹🇷 as it advances its nuclear plans in a safe and secure way, including potential future SMRs. We also exchanged on the importance of financing for nuclear, including from international financial institutions.
