Very interesting photo there. That Marine appears to have an early war issue Hawley liner in his M1 steel pot. Makes me think the photo was most likely taken on Guadalcanal because after that six month battle just about all issued Hawley liners had disintegrated in the tropical climate of that distant island. At any rate, it’s interesting to note that the Japanese round that penetrated his steel pot evidently rattled around between the Hawley liner & the steel pot. Pretty amazing. I hope he was able to keep that helmet & liner.

0311 - “To locate, close with and destroy the enemy by fire and maneuver or repel the enemy assault by fire and close combat.” - We give you guys a lot of shit but at the end of the day, we’re here to support YOU. You’re the ones taking the trench, putting boot to door, rounds in skulls and the bayonet to belly. - You have a long, rich history that dates back to the origins of the Marine Corps. Chapultepec, Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Chosin, Hue, Fallujah and Marjah just to name a small fraction. Be proud of your lineage and uphold that legacy no matter where you find yourself or what you find yourself doing. Don’t let the naysayers fool you, you matter and what you’re doing matters. - Today is your day. Tag an 11 in the comments and say thank you, or you’re welcome. - I used the same photo and caption the last 5 years, and will continue to do so.

This 3/8 day we remember Corporal Michael Ouellette. - “The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Michael W. Ouellette, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as the 2nd Squad Leader, 1st Platoon, Company L, 3rd Battalion 8th Marines (Reinforced), Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force- Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. - On 22 March 2009, Corporal Ouellette was leading his squad on a combat patrol in Nowzad District, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device exploded beneath his feet, severing his left leg and spraying him with shrapnel. Following the explosion, he directed his squad to prepare a hasty defense while helping to treat his own injuries. Moments later, enemy fighters opened fire on his squad with assault rifles and machine guns from point blank range. - Even as a Corpsman worked to stem his massive bleeding, Corporal Ouellette continued to direct the fire of his squad. When attack helicopters arrived, he coolly talked his radio operator through the employment of the aircraft as they made repeated strafing runs within 20 meters of the squad’s position. These expertly-applied fires suppressed the enemy long enough for a fire team to link up with reinforcements and bring them forward to Corporal Ouellette’s position. - He held that position and continued to give orders to his squad as they fought, allowing himself to be evacuated only when the entire squad was ready to move out of the area. He continued to give directions to his team leader up until he was loaded into an ambulance, where he soon lost consciousness. He later succumbed to his wounds. - By his bold leadership, wise judgment, and complete dedication to duty, Corporal Ouellette reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” - Rest Easy Marine

3rd Battalion 8th Marines - Gone but not forgotten. - 3/8 first saw action on Guadalcanal. They were bloodied on Tarawa. Again on Saipan and Tinian. If I’m not mistaken they were one of the only units from the 2nd Marine Division to actually go ashore during the Battle of Okinawa. - They were active throughout the Cold War and beyond seeing multiple deployments across the globe to hot spots like Lebanon, Bosnia, Haiti and others. - They would deploy to Afghanistan in December 2001 through September 2002. Haiti (pictured above) in 2004. Karma, Iraq in 05 and Ramadi in 06. They deployed to Helmand in 08-09. Again in 2010-2011 on the 26nd MEU and finally in 2012. - Deactivated on January 28, 2021, the unit’s legacy remains, not just in the history books but with the Marines who were apart of it. If you were in 3/8, send in your photos today. The post with the most likes is going to win a 3/8 flag!

GWOT vet here. 3 trips to Iraq from 2004-2007. I don’t hate Iran. I guess that makes me a liberal snowflake. We had no business in Iraq. WMDs were a hoax just like Iran’s been two weeks away from a nuke for the past 30 years. For as long as we have homeless vets, illegal immigrants, trillions of dollars of debt or a drug epidemic here at home, we shouldn’t be spending billions of dollars on another war on the other side of the globe. Did we learn nothing from the GWOT? Look at Afghanistan, we spent 20 years there just to leave it to the Taliban. Is Iraq better off now than it was? I don’t think so. Is Libya better off since we took out Gaddafi? I don’t think so. Syria, who’s the president now? One of the assholes that was fighting us in Iraq. Do we really believe Iran will be any different, whether we put boots on the ground or not? If we install a “friendly” regime chances are it’ll turn out like all the rest. Not to mention all of the Muslims that we’re supposed to hate being displaced and migrating to Europe and the US because of these wars. It’s time to wake up. Stop cheerleading for these wars that just make politicians and big business more money while our young men go fight and die for shit pay and chest full of ribbons that will were downgraded so a field grade could get another BS. Go read About Face and stay off X for a while.

Do average Americans understand just how much GWOT veterans hate Iran? Do average Americans understand that basically every GWOT veteran knows comrades in arms who were killed or maimed by Iran? Do average Americans understand that while GWOT veterans hate the idea of useless, endless wars, that most also support a rapid takedown of the Iranian regime that murdered their friends so long as the fight is led by decisive leaders who will allow us to win? Do average Americans understand any of this?

“The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Corporal Jason L. Dunham, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Rifle Squad Leader, 4th Platoon, Company K, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines (Reinforced), Regimental Combat Team 7, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), on 14 April 2004. - Corporal Dunham’s squad was conducting a reconnaissance mission in the town of Karabilah, Iraq, when they heard rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire erupt approximately two kilometers to the west. Corporal Dunham led his Combined Anti-Armor Team towards the engagement to provide fire support to their Battalion Commander’s convoy, which had been ambushed as it was traveling to Camp Husaybah. - As Corporal Dunham and his Marines advanced, they quickly began to receive enemy fire. Corporal Dunham ordered his squad to dismount their vehicles and led one of his fire teams on foot several blocks south of the ambushed convoy. - Discovering seven Iraqi vehicles in a column attempting to depart, Corporal Dunham and his team stopped the vehicles to search them for weapons. - As they approached the vehicles, an insurgent leaped out and attacked Corporal Dunham. Corporal Dunham wrestled the insurgent to the ground and in the ensuing struggle saw the insurgent release a grenade. Corporal Dunham immediately alerted his fellow Marines to the threat. - Aware of the imminent danger and without hesitation, Corporal Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body, bearing the brunt of the explosion and shielding his Marines from the blast. - In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the lives of at least two fellow Marines. - By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Dunham gallantly gave his life for his country, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” - Rest Easy Marine. On this 3/6 Day we remember PFC Lewis Nalder, 3rd Battalion 6th Marines, killed in action on 3 July, 1944 on Saipan. - Displaying the bazooka which knocked out four Japanese light tanks are bazooka men PFC Lauren N. Kahn, left, and PFC Lewis M. Nalder. The two Marines fired all their ammunition at Japanese tanks advancing in a counterattack on the night of D 1. Kahn then grabbed some grenades, approached one tank from the side, and tossed the grenade into its open turret. Their action saved a 37mm gun crew, the objective of the tank. The gun crew, with its men wounded, was also out of ammunition. - “The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lewis M. Nalder, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas group, on July 3, 1944. - Although previously wounded while attacking enemy caves, Private First Class Nalder unhesitatingly charged another hostile emplacement armed only with a bazooka and, when the weapon was shot out of his hand, promptly obtained a carbine and personally led a demolition team into the Japanese position. - With heroic disregard for his own safety, single-handedly provided cover for his men while they hurled charges into the cave, steadfastly maintaining his position until mortally wounded. - Private First Class Nalder’s fearless determination and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.” - Rest Easy Marine

Happy 3/5 Day - “Pictured here just moments before our movement to the “Apartment Complex” is 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, Kilo Company, 2nd Platoon.” - Repost from @jasonrlln_arellano • Excerpt from my journal (The beginning of Operation Phantom Fury) 041108: It is just past midnight and damn, it is cold, the wind is not helping either. I went to the side of a hill and dug a hole into it, I got inside it and covered myself with a poncho. I was too tired to care where I slept at that point and drifted off to sleep. At about 0400 it started to rain and a drop fell on my face, great. I just rolled over and shivered myself back to sleep. I woke up around 0530 and got the rest of the guys up. I used the exhaust of one of the tanks to dry off my poncho. A few of the other Marines quickly came over to take advantage of the heat from the tank. At 1000 we loaded up again, we did our comm checks and we’re now ready. At 1045 the tracks on our vehicle began to screech and turn. We began our push to our first objective, an apartment complex just north of Fallujah. At 1130 the ramp dropped and we were now in the attack. We took sniper fire from within the city and 6 hours later we took our objective. It was a succesful mission, zero casualties. Fighter planes fired the rest of the evening and throughout the night. Me and “Arkansas” (Clairday) went up and down through all the apartments looking for some eggs. I cooked some and we ate some “como se dice, burritos!” HA HA! It was good.
