Too many people don’t realize that not every planet in the Imperium is a hellhole hive world. Civilized worlds make up the majority of Imperial planets; they tend to have a decent standard of living and are relatively normal, just with 40K elements incorporated into them, things like symbols, architecture, etc. We see the horrible worlds more often because they make for a more interesting backdrop for stories. However, there are plenty of examples in novels that show more ordinary sides of the Imperium. The issue is that subtle grimdark doesn’t land for some people, so they default to grimderp, where everything in the Imperium is as brutal and miserable as possible. Usually, those same people also assume the Tau are universally good because their grimdark isn’t delivered like a hammer to the face.
