Donald Trump had a new coating slapped on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The pool has beeen newly filled with water. The algae are likely to reappear later. Donald Trump is a hack real estate developer from Queens, New York. Real estate developers know how to slap a new coating on a pool to make it look good temporarily. But they don't care about fixing underlying problems with the property. Donald Trump had the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool recoated Old Glory Blue, a good dark color which sounds good when called American Flag Blue, though not as good as Black would have been. But he did nothing to fix the algae problem. The algae problem started with the 2012 renovation. The water supply was switched from clean municipal water to Potomac River water from the Tidal Basin. Washington DC gets its water from the Potomac River, but it's treated and algae-free. Potomac River water is full of algae. A water treatment plant was installed but has failed repeatedly. The recoating did nothing to address the underlying problem of algae.

The renovations fail to address two miles of faulty, underground plumbing that continuously leaks water. When the pipes break, the pool must be disconnected from its filtration system, leaving the water stagnant and creating perfect conditions for green slime to thrive over the surface.
The original estimate was $1.8 million. Now it's at nearly $14M.

Obama admin oversaw the 2010-2012 Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation (~$34M, stimulus-funded). It rebuilt the foundation with 2,133 pilings, added Tidal Basin water circulation + ozone filtration to fix major leaks and stagnant water.
Closed ~2 years; reopened Aug 2012 with improvements. But leaks and algae recurred (drained/cleaned weeks later). Not a permanent fix—NPS handles ongoing maintenance, not the President directly.

I have a serious question… What kind of person gets mad that President Trump wanted this cleaned and repaired? 🤣 This is one of the most photographed sites in the entire National Mall — over 25 million visitors a year — and it was literally covered in 10 truckloads of trash, filth, algae, sludge, and leaking infrastructure. Wanting it restored isn’t political. It’s called basic stewardship of a national landmark. If you’re angry that someone wanted the Reflecting Pool to look like something other than a swamp… that says more about you than it does about him. Don't hate beauty-- hate filth.
