Misleading branding works well
Arthur MacWaters@ArthurMacwaters
Naming it USAID was brilliant honestly because most people are too dumb to even ask what it really does It’s like naming something “Save the Orphan Puppies Org” - what do you mean Elon got rid of it, does he hate puppies?! It’s like no, Save the Puppies was sending money to the literal taliban

This is my dad, Papalolo, in his Mobile Police uniform. He was part of the first set of Mobile Policemen in Nigeria, inaugurated in the early 60's. Trained to maim and kill, they were not called "Kill and Go" for nothing. My dad taught me how to survive contact with the police, he would admonish me, "Ikhide, once a policeman stops you, you are already in trouble, show respect, do not talk back, because things will only get worse!" That advice has probably saved my life a few times here in America.
My dad was a good looking man, blessed with a natural charm and superb story telling abilities, and he knew it. He loved women and women loved him back, sometimes too much. It all made sense, he was attentive to people and he said all the right things. He was also goal oriented; if he wanted something or anyone, he went for his desire full blast, with all his charm.
There was a sense of the invincible in him; he and his team mates were always leaving, speeding happily to "emergency" zones, armed to the teeth with everything, including ogogoro and whatever gunned their demons. They traveled in long convoys with dispatch riders on powerful motorbikes racing them to war. He always came back, all cool with his haversack and attitude. But this one time, he lost his cool; in the late 60's the Biafrans ambushed them in Asaba and beat the crap out of his contingent and he limped home with broken bones.
I thought he was the coolest dude ever; I followed him everywhere and could not wait for him to return from wherever he was always going to, just to listen to his stories. He was tough on his first three children (I was the oldest) but man, he cared. I was always getting into trouble and he was always getting me out of it.
He was not a perfect man; I inherited all his demons. He had stories, man. He claimed he was part of the special contingent of 100 extremely good looking warriors that formed a parade for the Queen of England when she visited Nigeria in the fifties. And he said the Queen touched him and spoke to him but protocol demanded that he did not respond. He also claimed that everywhere the Queen went, this contingent of extremely good looking men went before her and to this day the Queen thinks that all Nigerian policemen are drop-dead gorgeous like him. I am surprised he didn't take selfies with her.
An autodidact who did not attend high school but who read voraciously and continuously, he turned me on to stories, and the literature of our people, especially Chinua Achebe's books. He liked Things Fall Apart but his best books were No Longer at Ease and A Man of the People. He loved TM Aluko's books, especially One Man One Wife. In his youth he loved a good bottle of beer or two and taunting people with what he called hard truths. He was a royal pain in the ass to those who didn't like his truths. But he was fun to be around nonetheless.
Papalolo. Today, more than ever, I miss you, I miss your fantastic stories. I would say, "I love you," but you would look up from wherever you are in the pantheon of the uber cool and go, "This one has become a white man! Na who love epp? SMH!" Love you, regardless! Always!

The Department of State Services has closed its case against Nasir El-Rufai over alleged wiretapping. His lawyers seek a review of his bail terms, claiming he has met all but four, and challenged one condition, saying he knows no Level 17 civil servant who owns property in Maitama or Asokoro.
