@bartonovopolis PROJECT HAIL MARY you can sorta feel a conscious attempt to be 2001, which is a pretty big reach given the original author but I admire the attempt, even if I didn’t find it to capture its ambitions

There is a meats and potatoes quality to his screenplays that I love. They’re simple on paper but so emotionally effective and sincere. They're very classical in a way, despite the modern tech his movies still feel like blockbusters from the 80s and 90s.

I recently found out that Bush ran attack ads against John McCain during ‘00 primary, falsely accusing him of having an illegitimate black daughter. Fuzzy pics of him with his adopted daughter from Bangladesh seemed to corroborate the story & his campaign lost momentum. It probably should have been McCain v Gore 2000; President Bush shouldn’t have even been on the table but here we are anyways

A top notch 24 plot line was when President Palmer has to order Jack to execute his asshole boss who is played by Father Intintola and then he does it. Upon rewatch, much of the show is a workplace fantasy about when it's ok to lie to and/or kill your coworkers.
