Interesting idea: What author is a good metric for how well a reader you are? Blood Meridian is a very good book in my experience, but not a Great Book: two memorable scenes and a near iconic character.
Scott Raines@scotthraines

Cormac McCarthy is a good metric for how well you can read—it’s not the faux literary fluff that gets praised today, but it’s also not readily apparent to the reader. So much is said in what is unsaid, so you have to really read. For example:

A top notch 24 plot line was when President Palmer has to order Jack to execute his asshole boss who is played by Father Intintola and then he does it. Upon rewatch, much of the show is a workplace fantasy about when it's ok to lie to and/or kill your coworkers.

@willmenaker Season two where Jack’s shitty boss gets a faceful of yellow cake uranium in like episode one and spends 12 hours dying of radiation poisoning is easily one of the funniest things any show has done with a shitty boss

@willmenaker The way Jack was willing to pull that trigger on Chase was so funny. Even the cartel was like "damn dude it was just a test, you're in"

Mccarthy is the blueprint, the archetype, of faux literary fluff. Endless gore for shock value in the place of conflict that resolves moral questions (ie, good vs evil), nihilism mistaken for profundity. His style is overly verbose, his characters are intentionally amoral (because shades of grey is the "sophistacated" modern revolt against "antiquated" ideas like genuine heroism)...There are practically no redeeming qualities. You can pick up a Joe Ambercrombie, or Michael Punke or Martin, or any novel off the shelf at any big box book store, and find a book functionally identical to McCarthy. All the same slop.

@kyliebytes A moral dilemma that I dealt with and ask my friends about — what if it was a mother saying “can I sit with my kid”?

i’d rather the incest between paul and alia stay more in the subtext i think it’s much more interesting that way. when i was reading dune that’s exactly what stood out to me the subtlety of it. and for me it works better because their relationship is already inherently unsettling

@brian_mistrot @AaronBlake @DemFromCT My favorite “Trump leaker” thing is that the big leaker from his first term was just Epstein who he talked to all the time still and was spilling everything to Michael Wolff and Steve Bannon

@AaronBlake @DemFromCT I find it very unlikely he’s the leaker, frankly. And in full disclosure: I publicly endorsed his opponent, went on tv for her etc (MGP) to make sure he lost. So I’m no fan of his.

If this is true about Joe Kent, then the Trump administration kept a known leaker in a highly sensitive intelligence/counterterrorism job for months.
