only a few centuries in Middle Chinese, they were "srean sej" (Shanxi) and "syem sej" (Shaanxi) hell even in modern Cantonese they're "saan¹ sai¹" and "sim² sai¹" respectively btw fun fact, the "Shanxi" and "Shaanxi" spelling are basically the last commonly-encountered remnants of the Gwoyeu Romatzyh Mandarin romanization scheme that reflects different tones using different spellings, instead of accent marks or numbers. it's actually super fucking cool (and of course designed by Yuen Ren Chao, one of my linguistic heros), but proved to be too complex for most people to learn he designed a similar one for Cantonese, and an "inter-dialectal" written variety of Chinese that tried to represent nearly every Chinese variety at once called "General Chinese" if you ever want to lose a significant portion of your day i will absolutely talk your ear off about them

I'm studying the Chinese provinces and am learning about what I can only assume is a multi-millenia prank

@mikitaposts Yeah, I see that; I'd put like 30% odds on either of them have a major government role if change comes. But it shouldn't be ignored the benefit of an opposition movement having a voice being able to talk to foreign leaders at Davos or go on podcasts listened to by millions.

@_Benche_ I have my doubts any of them will be interim leaders. At best, they might win an election after democracy is already established.

I know some will strongly disagree with me, but I don’t care. These people are completely useless. All they do is talk and be given awards. If change does happen in those countries, it won’t be because of them.

Why is American politics so insanely optimized? We’ve had like 3 elections in a row (and 5/7) literally within 2% Basically every other country in the world has regular blowouts

@3lfares Generally, all languages convey information equally efficiently. By only having one word for the definite article, we sacrifice more flexible word order, prepositions, and pronouns. It all evens out.

If I were president, I would not have allowed them to close the Strait. I would’ve foreseen this possibility in advance.
