@lunaperla @NicholasTyrone The investment will all be private - this is just about govt giving permission for private companies to do it all. They take all the risk. We just get taxes and more energy supply

Stopped to have a wee on the way down to Portsmouth from South🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I paid £6.42 to top up at Membury. I paid £5.20 at home for a full charge overnight. I'll pay roughly £7 on the way back to top up. (10 minutes max charge) £18.72 for 320 miles. (6p ish a mile) Today my rates dropped now i'll pay £3 to fully charge at home and that's fixed for the next 11 months.

To the right wingers who keep responding to this, purely economic arguments would be fine if climate change wasn't a very real thing meaning that, alas, hydrocarbons will have to be kept in the ground

This is the best thing i've read on *why* the British right are still so hung up on oil and gas, despite the North Sea's increasingly diminishing returns. There is something about fossil fuels that is inherently more amenable to nationalist imaginaries break-down.org/return-to-trea…

Dear Parisians: On Thursday, April 16, please join Works in Progress and Stripe for an evening of conversation about how France can capitalise on its existing successes – good infrastructure, abundant clean energy and some of the best people on Earth – to prosper economically once again. The evening will include remarks on innovation and progress from @a_bergeaud, as well as a comparative look at the French and British economies from Works in Progress's @bswud, @SCP_Hughes and @pietergaricano. We hope to see you there! luma.com/kw9waijc?tk=T4…

@WataMelonX @mindofprospect Example Council flat in London, rent £700 but really worth £1500 a month, UC housing element covers it all Free council tax saves £200 a month Couple standard allowance £639 2 kids £600 To have a lifestyle like this (£3000 a month costs) with a job you’d need to earn £50k.

@DailyMail 60% of people on UC are working, the government are subsidising billionaires and large corporations paying poverty wages. Actual in work disability benefits PIP has been frozen for this parliament and the severe disability element slashed by 50%. So actually most are worse off.

Rent on all social housing which is near 20% of Englands housing and 40% in inner London is set centrally by the social housing regulator. The result is inefficiently distributed housing which increases rents in the private sector. We still have rent control and its terrible!
Gareth@g_f_red

We had rent controls in Britain until 1915 to 1988 and during this time housebuilding regularly hit over 300k per year. Since they were removed, the house price to income ratio has gone from 4:1 to around 8:1, and housebuilding numbers have collapsed.

@Jonathan_Hinder @FairerShare Jonathan I think you are one of the good ones but I pay more than my fair share through every other tax ? All you do is promise to take more of my money so that you can give it to people on benefits. I don’t think I’ll vote labour again at this rate

@Sargon_of_Akkad Wind and solar is deflationary. I would bet my house that you, personally, will have PV cells and lithium ion battery in your own home in a decade. We should use nuclear for guaranteed cheap industrial energy certainly.

Ramadan is becoming a lot more Christmassified. British Muslims used to do a “poor me” act every Ramadan but now now it’s all Eid goody bags and Iftar parties I think this is probably a good thing

@Steven_Swinford all this from a few lines on his linkedin? The costs he is talking about is running, maintaining and upgrading our electricity grid. That isn't a policy cost. I guess the policy costs could be renewables, but that is investing in something which will bring down prices in future.

The head of M&S has accused the government of driving up the cost of energy bills for businesses amid mounting concern about the impact of Iran war Stuart Machin said government levies now account for half of his company's energy costs 'Over the last few years the 'policy costs' on our energy bill have skyrocketed 'These are the tariffs that government place on our bills to fund their policies, and have nothing to do with the price of oil or gas. They now make up over half our bill. It's just not sustainable for UK businesses'

@Chrimms2 @TempletonPeckJr @Steven_Swinford @MaxKendix Because society should be built on the basis that the poor and the downtrodden will always receive the help they need. Pulling others down to stand on their backs doesn't help anyone. You'll never be a billionaire you share more in common with those on benefits than the rich.

Exclusive from @MaxKendix Rachel Reeves is expected to limit an energy bill bailout to people on benefits after warning that giving support to every household because of the Iran war would be irresponsible and unaffordable The Times has been told that the planned support will be directed instead at about six million people who claim benefits such as universal credit and pension credit While Reeves has asked about a potential “income threshold” to support lower-earning households, officials have said they are unlikely to be able to develop the system in time. Treasury sources emphasised that several options were being looked at but that no decisions had been taken Officials have identified several barriers, including the fact that HM Revenue & Customs records the income of individuals, while an energy bailout would have to focus on households. A project to link up the information started in January and was due to take more than a year Reeves will therefore have little choice but to give support to people claiming benefits, using the warm home discount, which reduces electricity bills for poorer households by £150, as the model for the scheme “The methods of targeting are imperfect,” one government source said. But another said there was “a lot of defeatism” about what systems could realistically be introduced in time. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

“WE’RE NOT YOUR FRIENDS, PAL!” Locals in Carlisle are sick of seeing men from the nearby migrant hotel congregating outside the Lidl while old women shop. I have many friends from some rough parts of the city. They won’t tolerate this.
