@IHateSoccerPod @ImCollegeSoccer The big schools definitely put in the effort - hence out of town P4 schools attending practices. During my kid’s U16 year, 265 schools scouted and 40 of those watched 6-11 times. The hard part for players- UNC, FSU can watch 9 games and still not call anyone on the team!

@ImCollegeSoccer Just had this exact conversation with a top D1 women’s soccer coach today about this. About how often they want to see a player. They get to see them a lot more because of the school they are at. Not every school gets to see them 8 times.

Is it Bad Recruiting by the College Coach? 🤔 You often hear parents, players and fans upset at the college coach when a player gets released for not being good enough with the common response, “it’s not the players fault. It’s poor recruiting on the college coach” Let’s break that down for most of you that don’t know. Only your elite players get evaluated at 3-5 showcases and 1 to 2 club practices. This is only by schools that can afford to do that. 97% of D1’s can’t afford to evaluate that much. So what are we saying? Most schools can only evaluate once or twice through showcases if they are lucky. So they are hoping what they saw in such a small sample sizes works out. It could have very well been the players best game of the season they saw and the coach was fooled to believe it’s like that all the time. Along with club coaches selling their kids to be more than what they are. Film that’s deceiving. Poor competition. Etc. Even evaluating the elite athletes 3-5x is not enough and you can be fooled. So no, there’s no exact science to recruiting a player. You hope that what you saw from the player in such a small sample size can help you win. “Awful recruiting by the college coach.” Stop, everyone doesn’t get a trophy. Playing time is not equal. So let’s be honest, the player wasn’t good enough to play or they would have played. When you’re not good enough, you’re not good enough and that’s why 99% of players are released from their program. Bad recruiting or not, on such a small sample size of evaluation , that’s fine , but the player wasn’t good enough #CSTruth

DISCUSSION - comment below I think many soccer players/parents think of "soccer scholarship" = "full ride" like in football and basketball.... Even the MLS Next/ECNL kids that are indeed going D1 .... are not on anywhere near full-rides You have to be able to pay....

@COLSOCStats More hope on the girls side - my kid’s team already has 4-5 players from the class of 2027 with full athletic scholarships. And they’re not national team kids or anything crazy.

It just feels as if there is zero pathway forward for players from lower-income, single-parent households..... Unless you are on an MLS Academy Not saying it should be FREE .....but no way it should cost 7K per year to play high-level club soccer That is insane

I’m calling it I think this is Qasem’s re-breakout game. He’s been putting the pieces together and I think this is it. With the defense shading right he’ll have space on the left Good to see Surridge on the bench. Need him to get some minutes so he’s ready on Tuesday

@natedfeldman @ImYouthSoccer A 13% grad rate is rough. But you are right to point out the coaching change, a major driver of these data. And players should be prepared for what a coaching change means.

@aehal1 @ImYouthSoccer 42% roster retention, 13% graduated, 21% played significant minutes and transferred, 24% minimal minutes or none and transferred. Purdue’s first full recruiting class for a staff in their second full year is 2026…keep watching.

@ImCollegeSoccer That’s absurd. It’s not that hard to follow up with recruits. If you’ve had a phone conversation with somebody, you owe them a text or email at a minimum. A quick “we have moved on” is enough.

@EricLambinus @ImCollegeSoccer This is not about talent or love of the game. D3 schools are allowed fewer player contact hours. Preseason starts in August not July. Spring includes just 5 weeks of practice and one official game. That’s not good or bad, but it is a difference that recruits should understand.

@ImCollegeSoccer Only true for the top 25-50 DI schools, and honestly, it is only hours directed by staff members, not hours devoted to sport. You want to be great, devote as many hours as possible. And trust me, high D1 has a lot of very talented players who only show up because they have to.

DM: the D1 vs. D3 decision for high academic kids. Leaving aside the debate about team quality, there’s a big difference in the number of hours devoted to sport between the two divisions. My daughter felt like D3 would be a drop in intensity from her current soccer team, and she considered that unacceptable. Other players may like the idea of a different school/sport balance. Going to a D3 camp was the best thing we did in her sophomore year, because I had a long list of D3s and she quickly crossed them all off her list 😆 -Parent #CSTruth

What are some differences between D1, D2, D3, NAIA and JC programs? There are exceptions but generally speaking. D1 - the best players in the country. Best facilities, best budgets, great academics, sought out by most kids, parents and coaches. Simply the best. D2 - great players, not quite as academic known as others. Rosters are very internationally favored. Great facilities. Decent budgets. Very large rosters but lots of opportunities out there. D3 - good players, brilliant academics, no athletic scholarship but decent academic packages. Facilities are hit and miss , mostly miss. Poor budgets. NAIA - Good players, a lot of scholarship money. Very very large rosters. Average academics is putting it nicely. Very poor budgets. Most kids couldn’t tell who or what NAIA is. Very populated by internationals. Most schools in poor shape financially. Poor facilities. JC - 2 year. Level of players ranges all over the place from elite Power 4 to D3. Bigger rosters. A lot of money available. A cheaper route to develop and get your first two years of school paid for. Poor facilities for the most part but a lot of opportunities #CSTruth

Her distribution is fantastic, her positioning is always perfect. She’s tactically one of the smartest soccer minds we have. She’s coming off an ACL injury so of course the pace and quickness might not be there but she’s the best we got. She showed that last night
Nathan Huffhines@npaintedhufhinz

@InspiredByJM What do you like about her? I see negative things...lack of pace & quickness primarily

@IHateSoccerPod This highlights the large RL/NL gap. Overall the club has a 6-58-3 record in their first ECNL year. It’s a tough transition. Their current combined goal differential is -201. I’m sure they’ll get better, and hopefully some talented players will stay local in the future.

They had to play in the RL for 3 years and they had a combined 1000+ goal differential in the league before being promoted to the ECNL. Episode comes out tomorrow! I Hate Soccer #89 - Mike Aubry, Executive Director at GTFC

Do we need to throw BJ Callaghan’s name into the mix for next USMNT coach? He’s done a great job with Nashville SC, plays young American players, and has the prior USSF experience.

@InspiredByJM I’ve been a fan since her U15 USYNT debut. Happy to see her thriving with Gotham. I think it’s clear that Emma doesn’t want to destroyer as her defensive mid, so Jaelin and Hal are out. But both great players!
