feeling increasingly sympathetic to those guys who started out on inner work / meditative / psychedelic journeys or w/e and eventually converted to christianity. i imagine it's like getting married and settling down. it would be a relief to just commit to a single ethical and spiritual framework and community and start living life from it. unfortunately the impression i get is that you really do have to believe a bunch of stuff about jesus that, despite my increasing openness to spiritual and magical phenomena in general over the years, i can't bring myself to believe (yet?). but the like "jesus was merely a wise spiritual teacher" position feels pretty milquetoast. idk

@catehall We can solve it with three jobs: 1. Mail carrier 2. Paperwork reader 3. Paperwork writer (By law, all paperwork must be filed manually and sent via USPS)

@TVachaW have any celibate monks corroborated this? I appreciate some of your posts but this sounds like nonsense.

I think there’s something inherently sexual about spiritual development. To be on a spiritual path is to learn how to become intimate with reality. To come into deep contact with it and let it penetrate us. To allow the boundaries between self and other to dissolve. All this follows similar dynamics to the sexual dynamic of contact, intimacy, penetration, merging and dissolution. I think it’s partly why dedicated monks often become celibate. Not because sex has become disgusting to them. But because their sexual drive is fulfilled in every moment by their intimacy with every part of reality. The totality of reality becomes a sexual partner that no individual component of reality can match. Each moment of life, however mundane, becomes like kissing a different part of reality’s body. To awaken in some sense, I think, can be analogous to experiencing life as one endless orgy, where our sexual partner is the totality of reality itself. A sexual relationship so deep that all sense of self is entirely dissolved.
Vacha@TVachaW

Magic and sex are deeply linked but not in the ways most people think. When most people go to a “tantra” workshop, they imagine magical sex is all about making sex more magical. But actually, magic is more about making everything that is *not* sex feel as magical as sex. For most people, sex already feels very magical. That’s because our biological drive has projected our inherent sense of majesty onto sex to incentivize us to reproduce. True tantra and true magic rely on seeing into the emptiness of that projection. Seeing that there is nothing more inherently magical about sex than about anything else. This allows us to transform ostensibly sexual energy into all purpose magic-energy that can supercharge our spiritual path. The bliss, meaning and love we find in sex is something we project onto it, not something inherent to it. And we have the power to project bliss, meaning and love onto anything with the same intensity that we project it onto sex. Actually we have the capacity to experience all this bliss, meaning and love without projecting it onto anything. Anything we project externally is a power within us that we can experience without the object of projection. This not only frees us to always experience the world as magical, it also frees us to treat others as co-subjects of compassionate exchange rather than objects to project our need for magic onto. Sex can teach us a little of what magic looks like. But if we learn the lesson well, we can see that magic everywhere.

@keysmashbandit This sometimes happens if my arm is in a weird position while I'm sleeping. That's a real sensation being incorporated into a dream, so I'm not sure if it counts.

Clav is important in part precisely because he is so unhappy. What he is aspiring to is what our culture implicitly tells us is the ultimate good, his autism making that implicit explicit. As he ascends to what every young man with a modicum of ambition secretly aspires to be, but never achieves due to laziness and risk aversion, only to find that its attainment means little and does not fill the hole in his soul, he becomes more and more distraught. And when he eventually realizes that the goal is foolish and searches for something more worthwhile, live in front of millions of acolytes, he will unleash a spiritual and cultural reformation in young men the likes of which has not been seen in centuries.

@Ancapta How does the listener know if the intended meaning is non-rhetorical? Is there a word you can use to tell them?

I am a staunch defender of the non-precise "literally." The meaning is not being eroded, it's just hyperbole! "This is literally the worst day of my life" The semantic meaning of 'literally' is intended--it's just an intentionally a false statement for rhetorical effect
Andy Ryan@ItsAndyRyan

For language pedantry, my rule is whether a useful meaning is being lost. It's handy to have a term than means 'not figurative', so I bemoan 'literally' being applied to metaphors. But I ask defenders of 'decimate' – how often does anyone want to say 'one in ten men were killed'?

Does it count as "first words" if the baby doesn't know the meaning? My son is definitely saying "bye-bye" while waving but I'm pretty sure he thinks it means "the thing you do so that other people wave bye-bye back at you".
