Elon Musk's satellite empire was built to make cell towers obsolete. This week it quietly told investors it may start building cell towers. Everyone keeps waiting for a magic Elon phone that connects anywhere on Earth. It is not coming. Musk said so plainly “we are not developing a phone”. The problem was never the phone. It is physics. A Starlink satellite sits 550 kilometers up. It can reach a phone anywhere with a clear view of sky, a field, a mountaintop, the deck of a ship. Put that same phone on the third floor of a concrete office building or condo and the signal dies. A roof and two walls swallow it, and a handheld is far too weak to shout back to orbit through them. Indoors, the signal can land hundreds of times weaker than a normal cell tower's. So direct-to-cell works beautifully where almost no one is, and fails in the one place people spend 90 percent of their lives. That is why the next move is not a phone. It is the opposite of everything the company was built on. To sell a real mobile plan that works in cities and inside buildings, SpaceX needs towers on the ground. Its slice of the airwaves is 65 megahertz against the big carriers' 1,020, a gap that bites hardest exactly where satellites fail, in the city. So last week its president told investors it may build its own ground network across America and take on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, backed by the 17 billion dollars of spectrum it has already secured. Yup! Sit with the irony. The most successful attempt in history to escape the ground is being pulled back down to it. The sky, it turns out, has a ceiling, and the ceiling is your bedroom wall. The company that promised to bypass the towers is about to become a tower company. @elonmusk when ? I think the piece works out why the road to space runs through the ground.

Decades of investment in productive sectors and infrastructure have helped these states sustain high growth. More importantly, a strong industrial base gives them the flexibility to pivot from declining or non-performing sectors to emerging growth industries, ensuring long-term economic resilience.

Did you know? Just four states -Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra - have sustained strong long term real GDP growth close to or above 8% over the last three decades.

Two things that are normalized now that were not the case in the past: 1. Shopping every month 2. Eating out twice a week. I feel if this is reduced, many people’s financial planning would be in a better state.

In the middle of my 10th standard, an astrologer told me I'd fail in life and never even pass 10th. I was a 60–65% student till 9th then. I ignored the prediction, worked hard, scored 80%+, earned multiple professional degrees, and built my career. Hard work beats predictions.😀

Devils are not born; they are made, sometimes by horoscope. I met a 28-year-old IT engineer and father to a toddler. He is not allowed to drive any vehicle because his kundli says he might kill someone. His father drops him at the office every day. He has never learned how to ride bicycle or any type of vehicle. I couldn’t resist and asked the uncle what his kundli says about AI.

I have heard this complaint from more than a dozen visitors to India this year. The e-visa site is a real challenge - and it’s a bad first impression for tourists coming to India. Needs to be fixed asap.

Before you read this article, grab a glass of water and a paracetamol. Walk over to your laptop—the supercomputer in your hand is not up to the task—and see if you can figure out how to apply online for an Indian visa. We’ll wait economist.com/asia/2026/06/2…
