I never had any interest in politics. In 2020 I realized not only do I have something to offer, but I *need* to feel less helpless and more heard. In addition to advising state officials, I’ve attended every meeting of my town’s board of health. And now I’m an elected member.

@ShiraDoronMD @Brian_Higgins @DrLeanaWen Perhaps not nefarious but that’s a really poor definition (the w/in 29 days part especially). As researchers, we are taught that the way a construct is defined can drastically shift results. Why not adjust to a definition w/ better face validity to avoid being seen as nefarious?

@Brian_Higgins Right. And as @DrLeanaWen wrote, that doesn’t imply there’s anything nefarious going on. Surveillance definitions are never perfect but can often be improved upon.

I’m noting a lot of confusion about how it could be that a death is counted as a COVID death when it’s incidental. It’s important to understand the HHS definition of a COVID death. It doesn’t have to be on the death certificate. cdn.ymaws.com/www.cste.org/r…

If you aren’t seeing patients in the hospital, it can be hard to understand how much things have changed. Overcounting #COVID19 hosp and death undermines vaccine efficacy and confidence (and uptake). Thanks @DrLeanaWen for a great summary of the issue washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…

@ErinBromage @TheNickFoy Perhaps for southern MA, but this was definitely not the case at all across the rest of MA. My elementary kids (and many in the state) were in a hybrid model with only two in-person days until April 2021.

@TheNickFoy We were fortunate. In southern Mass and RI, almost all schools, public and private, were in-person in by mid-September 2020. A few schools had hybrid program for a few months, esp. packed high schools, but elementary and middle schools were in person (for those that wanted).

…which means we need to think very hard before we consider bringing those measures back again in this era of high immunity and low severity of #COVID19. Doing so will kick the can down the road. Great visual explainer from the Lancet: thelancet.com/journals/lance…

End of Fall semester @UMassLowell and my @ManningUML Org Behavior students are feeling a (hopefully healthy) mix of tired, educated, exhausted, relieved, stressed, knowledgeable, busy….and HAPPY!

In response to this study, and the ensuing backlash, I hear people on both sides of the mask debate calling for RCTs. Of mask effectiveness and of mask harms. I like high quality research as much as the next girl, but I don’t agree we need RCTs. 🧵 nytimes.com/2022/11/10/hea…

What would an RCT on mask harms tell us? That these people’s experiences don’t matter? That they are lying? That they are in the minority and the minority doesn’t count? That when they say they can’t bear the thought of going back to that, we shouldn’t care?
